Is this the 1st League or Championchip where goal keepers were top or joint top scorers for their County?

Generally free takers are more often the top scorers for their team and Raymond was our free taker Sunday in horrible conditions and joint top scorer, so no slight on our forwards they had to win the frees for him.

It's a serious slight on our forwards when none of them are able to take a free…. When Garoid returns he will be able to knock over a few….

They are able to take frees, paddy Lynch can take frees, cormac oreilly takes frees for mullahoran, , c reilly from butlersbridge can take frees, Chris conroy can take frees, do you follow any club football? Lots of our forwards can take frees, Niall Murray can take frees, gearoid can take frees, but Sunday in them bad conditions ray was the best to take frees and he showed that, you have to remember he used to be a forward too, so no slight at all on the lads, apart from you looking down your nose at them, would you have kicked them Sunday??

They would be capable of taking a free but wouldn't have the range for long distance., Galligan, Beggan and Morgan take the long range frees. Though there be outfield players in all Counties with the range to take long distance frees ,and not rely on a keeper

Tyrone use to bring up Morgan to take 20metre frees.

I think soaking up time when against the wind was part of the reason Ray was sauntering up to take them - it had Moran going beserk on the line. Paddy Lynch a good free taker.

Hardly. many can take frees. Just when you've a player like Galligan who can take them, let him at it. and GMac and Lynch normally take the ones further in depending on which side the free is on. Not a slight on our forwards, just seems to be what we have and it's fine. Weird your issue with this

It's just weird goalkeepers coming away up the field to take free kicks… It's not Cavan that's only at it … Terrible that outfield players are unable to kick the ball off the ground from anywhere beyond 30/35m…. It's a skill of the game which is sadly lacking… I think the introduction of free taking from the hand has had a very damaging effect on this skill…. it's something the GAA could look at ( instead of some of the silly rule changes they dream up ) and it would be very easily rectified….

Why? They're generally some of the best strikers of the ball in the team since we moved away from just booting a ball a mile up the field, and they starting picking out players instead. They can kick out a ball up to 20 times a game, and generally get a very good read on wind and conditions. It makes absolute perfect sense if you have a keeper who is high percentage on long kicks. Why would you give up the chance of a score? It's more weird if you left him down the field and had harder chances for players who might not take them for there. Really strange you've an issue with this. We use Galligan for ~45m frees, and use GMac and Lynch for further in.

And what do you want the GAA to have a look at? Would you want to stop them letting certain players take frees? What?? You're making no sense here

While in general I do accept that you would hope to have outfield players that can score frees inside 40m, last weekend was an exception to the rule such were the horrendous conditions. In my opinion there were only 3/4 free takers in the country that would have knocked over those 4 pts Galligan got. They were exceptional. Of course, it was also a tactic to waste some time into the wind and make sure Leitrim got no momentum with the wind.

Do you want the game to be slowed down even more ?

Tipp game should be fairly balanced, and we sometimes randomly struggle going to places like Sligo - hopefully not this year!"
Yes 11 or more is ok normally apart from Division 1

Yes I personally believe Sligo away is our toughest game left - we always have a battle with them and if my memory serves me correctly this particular fixture can often get a little bit feisty ! ! win that and you're going up

Loughduff lad …. If you can't see the point I'm making then there's no point in trying to make it for you… Goalkeepers taking frees has always been a big no no for me…. It was summed up in a game a few years back ( v Wexford away I think ) when Cavan summoned Gillsenan to take a 45… after taking what seemed 5 minutes to get there he preceded to kick the ball backwards to one of our defenders behind him….. Half the crowd burst into laughter and the other half headed for the exits….mind boggling.. Question…. Why didn't keeper's take 45s and other scoreable frees before free kicks were taken from the hand…. ? Because every team had a quality free taker including Cavan ( remember Ronan Carolan ) .. now very few teams possess one… for the reason I was making to you…..

But if our goalkeeper is a superior freetaker? Like they strike the ball way more than anyone else, then it simply makes sense. And why not? Why give up a higher percentage chance of a score? I do get that it is a skill being lost to some further up the field, but I think you're getting caught up in TG4 gold type tinted glasses. Not every team had that kind of free taker, and even those that did, didn't always take a high % of shots. I watched back some of the 97 matches when they were uploaded over the pandemic, and let me tell you, my memory had Ronan Carolan scoring everything off the ground from all over, but he actually missed quite a few kicks that would be considered easier these days. I think the past you are thinking of does not exist. It is a good skill, but please don't try and tell me everyone had one in a team. They didn't. Keepers are some of the best strikers of a ball for a reason, so why not keep using them?

Like all keepers Galligan misses his fair share too… I just hope we unearth a real free taker in the near future….

He takes the long shots to be fair, from 45m+ in all weather. He doesn't take ones from 30m in and such. The ones he takes are never guaranteed and are hard so he will miss some. Can't believe that some are giving out about it. He's a very good free taker from that distance. Sure we have an Ulster title due to that free he scored from over 55 metres against Monaghan? He will miss some, but we need that option. Can't believe this is even being discussed....
