Cork Chairman Pitches New AI SHC Revamp

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Replying To omahant:  "When you go beyond two teams in Lein, quality falls off the cliff (e.g. Offaly in 2016 AI QF). I really think if 8 teams, Lein 4th should be better than Muns 5th on merit."
Thats not true every year. Over the last 5 years 2022 we suffered a couple of key injuries coming towards injury time against Clare when we were up, and Galway beat Cork in the other AIQF. 2023 Galway beat Tipp, although Dublin didnt show up against Clare. 2024 we were level with Clare until they had a man extra in the second half, and Dublin pushed Cork at the end of the other AIQF. 2025 Dublin beat Limerick. Its not all one sided AIQFs.

Congratulations to the Cork camógs who managed to do what their male counterparts have failed to do for the past 22 years. Well done ladies and hard luck to Galway. Fine game!

The Cork camogs didn't have to deal with Brian Cody and John Kiely.

Mixed divisions seeded on previous years placings .
2 groups of 6 Joe mac winners promoted .and no relegation from previous year in first year .
Groups would look like on this years placings
1 limerick , dublin, clare , offaly , waterford , laois
2 galway , cork, kilkenny , tipperary , wexford , kildare

best placed team from each province in each group play in provincial finals .

Provincial winners get a bye into semi finals
Losers play winners of a preliminary 1/4 final .
Between the next best placed team group 1 and 2nd next best placed team group 2 after provjncial finalists are taken out .and vice versa group 2
Winners of preliminarys play provincial losers in 1/4 final .
Preliminary 1/4 finals played same weekend as provincial finals .
Bottom placed teams in each group play relegation final . 5th place teams out . Joe mac winners promoted for following year .
The seedings for following year based on finishing places in all ireland and then group placings . With at least 2 munster in each group .
Seedings wouud work like
1 all ireland winner
2 all ireland losers
3 and 4 losing semi finalists drawn from a hat
5 to 10 downwards finishing positions in previous years round robin to determine seedings
11 12 relegation winners and Joe mac winners .
Draw from hat for say 5 th 6th pairing 7th 8th pairing 9th and 10th pairing to ensure teams from provinces and balanced out . Only issue is if 4 semi finalists are from same group . Then we would just work out rankings from group placings previous year .
Sounds complicated but its not really . All teams bar 5th place get a knockout or relegation game . 5 games for 2 teams . At least 6 for everyone else . Between 7 to 9 for an all ireland winner 9 if coming through prelims winning provincials gives u a little rest in between .

@Formertownie - just an observation, and not a criticism. Basically, you'd have provincial finals, but not provincial championships.

Say for example that in your Group 2, Cork v Tipperary ended in a draw. Then whichever of them gets to play in the Munster Final would be determined 100% by their respective records against four Leinster teams. I couldn't see counties voting for that.

Then again, and thinking of how there's talk over on the Wexford thread about how things could work differently if clubs didn't have a vote on club championship structure after all - you could use the same argument to say counties shouldn't have a vote on inter-county structures. But you'd have the same can of worms then as well.

Thats true and a valid fair point the other downside could be , u could be 3rd or 4th place team in either group and likewise 5th place or 4th place munster team could potentially make munster or leinster final and potential semi final . but the current structure does nt seem.to be working how long has it been since waterford played a knock out game or had threat of relegation .
The trade off would be that if munster feel they are so superior to leinster teams would they back themselves to qualify for at least a prelim 1/4 final .
It's not ideal but its something that could work and still keep provincial championship alive all be it a different structure.
They also would nt have played the provincial finalists opposition in the round robin series.
The pluses more teams , more games , anyone can win all ireland anyone could be relegated a reward for making or winnjng provincial final . the best most consistent teams should make semi finals . It will force all teams to up the ante overall, not every game will be competitive no different than current structure but every game will mattter .
If there was one more munster team it would work better . Could possibly make Joe mac winners munster contenders or introduce Kerry full stop . Relegate kildare this year or losers relegation final next year .
I ll let someone else point out negatives or downsides to try eliminate them if possible

If Leinster expanded to 8, it can be the white horse to provide 5 quarter finalists.

8 All Ireland quarter finalists:
Leinster winner home to Leinster 5th.
Munster winner home to Leinster 4th.
Leinster runner-up in neutral venue against Munster 3rd.
Munster runner-up in neutral venue against Leinster 3rd.

So, 60% to 62.5% from each Prov, regardless of quality.

My blueprint again below.

All teams play mixed-province, inter-group ties, encompassing all Prov 'KO ties', prior to AIC KO.

For ease of presentation, I show a 5-team Leinster, but my preference is to have a 'Lein 9 & Muns 5' (two groups of 7, inter-group 7-match schedule) based on this method:

- Munster KO 5 & Leinster KO 5
- AIC with two groups of 5 (A & B)
- Groups 'formed', not drawn

- Muns QF loser to Group A, winner to B
- SF opponent of Muns QF winner to A
- Muns Finalists placed in opposite groups
- Muns SF losers to opposite groups
- There is a Muns trio in A & pair in B

- Lein QF winner to Group A, loser to B
- SF opponent of Lein QF winner to B
- Lein Finalists placed in opposite groups
- Lein SF losers to opposite groups
- There is a Lein pair in A & trio in B

- Merge to form two groups of 5 (A & B)
- Each team completes a 5-game inter-group
schedule, including all their Prov KO ties (1-3)
- Prov KO is 'winner on the day' (1 point each, if
drawn at full time)

- All teams play in the last inter-group round on June 6/7,
including Prov Finals [could be June 20/21 if AIC Finals
were flipped (football first) and played on opposite sides
of the August Bank Holiday weekend]

- Top 6 advance to AIC KO from a combined 10-team table
- Top 2 of 6 earn QF byes (not necessarily Prov Champs)
- AIC KO targets 'intra-group ties' to avoid repeat pairings
- QFs could be 3v6 & 4v5 (avoid repeat pairings, if possible)
- SFs could have 'seed 1 v lowest QF seed winner'

- 10th relegated/McDonagh Cup Champ promoted
- 14th relegated instead with preferred 'Lein 9/Muns 5'
(multiple 'Kildares' stay up)

And all 5 would be so ill-prepared as to be beaten by all the Munster counties.

If Leinster does take the 2 groups of 4 route - the two 3rd placed teams could playoff to join 2 Leinster semi finalists and 3rd from Munster in preliminary quarter finals. Munster keep their 3 from 5. The preliminary quarter finals would determine who emerges for the quarter finals against the 2 runners up.

So you want 5 out of leinster now?

Wouldn't say want. Munster have reasons for keeping the Munster Championship as is. If Leinster expands to 8 and has 4 semi finalists, where their semi finalists enter the All Ireland would be up for discussion.

As Kevin O'Donovan (Cork CEO) said, something to the effect, do we want to protect our own little empire (Munster) and let the rest of hurling die? He seems to be looking out for the greater good - unlike many of his own colleagues!

One good way to prevent that 'death' is to have more inter-prov ties.

How about a 14-team AIC (Muns 5 & Leon 9):

All teams play mixed-province, inter-group ties, encompassing all Prov 'KO ties', prior to AIC KO

- Munster KO 5 & Leinster KO 9
- AIC with two groups of 7 (A & B)
- Groups 'formed', not drawn

- Muns QF loser to Group A, winner to B
- SF1 opponent of Muns QF winner to A
- Muns Finalists placed in opposite groups
- There is a Muns trio in A & pair in B

- Lein Prelim winner to Group A, loser to B
- QF1 opponent of Lein Prelim winner to B
- Lein Q1 & Q2 winners (SF1);
Lein Q3 & Q4 winners (SF2); and
Lein Finalists placed in group opposite teams played
- Lein QF & SF losers to group opposite teams played
- There is a Lein quartet in A & quintet in B

- Merge to form two groups of 7 (A & B)
- Each team completes a 7-game inter-group
schedule, including all their Prov KO ties (1-4)
- Prov KO is 'winner on the day' (1 point each, if
drawn at full time)

- All teams play in the last inter-group round on
June 6/7, including Prov Finals [could be June
20/21 if AIC Finals were flipped (football first)
and played on opposite sides of the August
Bank Holiday weekend]

- Top 6 of 14-team table advance to AIC KO
- Top 2 earn QF byes (not always Prov Champs)
- AIC KO targets non-repeat 'inter-group ties'
- QFs could be 3v6 & 4v5 (if non repeat)
- SFs includes 'Seed 1 v lower QF seed winner'
- 14th relegated/ McDonagh Champ promoted
- Multiple 'Kildares' stay up
- Shorten NHL to accommodate AIC match expansion

What's not to like? - too many mismatches? - yes, this is a near-term price to be paid to 'grow the game' (and still, plenty top matches too!)

I'd hope more 'Kildares' would develop with match experience - the alternative? - protect 'Munster's Empire'!

Before the provincial groups came in in 2017:
Munster had 5.
Leinster had 5.
There was also 4 in a Leinster qualifying group.

If Leinster could revert to being a group of 5...
... could an All Ireland qualifier group of 4 exist for teams 11 to 14...

The conundrum being how the qualifier group winners get an opportunity to get into their provincial 5.

In my idea above, each of those 4 weak Lein counties would likely play two of the others (pair likely in each group). As for their five other games, well....things might get ugly for a while....but could they all become 'Kildares'?
