National League 2019

Replying To Hardtimes:  "That's a very long yardstick you have for improvement Pat- basically beating a top 6 team in Championship. We have a couple of steps to cover before expecting that. League is a good indicator and staying in Division 1 or at least staying as a top Division 2 team is a good indication of quality and consistency. Beating the Tipps, Kildares, Downs and Armaghs regularly in Championship would be another indicator (might actually get us knocking on the door of the Super 8s) and a step or two above where we currently are. Maybe I read your post wrong but we're in no position to be turning our nose down on top 12 teams."
Not really, you read it right I'd say.

Beating Top 7-12 is where we are now I suppose, but without any consistency. We could easily lose to Tipp's etc. and have done.

Next step is surely getting to a stage where we beat those teams regularly and almost every time out, and causing a semi shock by beating a Monaghan etc. who are ahead of us in terms of having a few more star men but they are not the Dubs or anything that we are bet before we start. Playing them if you could keep McManus quiet like others have at times, (including Faulkner 2 years ago in Monaghan Town) and play at 100% ourselves, you might not be far away.

Let's not set the bar low for Mickey either.. our panel includes plenty of our golden generation u'21's like GMcK, Gerry Smith, etc. who are supposed to be at their peak age now, so I think if we classify this a full start again rebuilding then we are only codding ourselves and we'll never do anything..

Is Fergal Flanagan from Butlersbridge retired from county football now altogether, surely he would still be a useful defender to have in there?

Flanagan withdrew due to injury.

Ciaran Brady - Killian Clarke - Gerard Smith

Michael Argue - Gearoid Mc Kiernan

I this should and will be the 15 for Galway, I found it hard to find a place for Killian Clarke, he needs to have a big year.

For me we're a step off beating 7-12 teams. Derry in 13 is the last time we done that. They've regressed since but beaten us since. Roscommon are no shoe in for Super 8's but we've never beaten them. Tipp beat us. All our wins have been against teams outside the top 12 if you're honest. Even top 16 there's not too many teams I'd be saying we'll definitely beat in Championship. It's not that I don't think we can. It's because we haven't shown that form yet so that's the next step. Looking to compete with top 6 is a bit away. That's not to say we could shock one of them once off but consistency is the yard stick and going by our track record we'd unlikely follow it up next match.
Ulster is a tough one and beyond us at present IMO. So our real goals for this year should be to try stay up in league and to get a run in qualifiers and actually threaten to get into Super 8s. In saying all that getting to an Ulster final is a long shot and would be fantastic.

To be honest im very scared of you lads this year. Yous have now got a manger that is capable of preparing and Psyching teams up for big games and winning them. i.e Mullingachta. Between Hyland and Mc Glennan they failed to win a big game but graham has got a big game winning mentality and I believe he is possible preparing that big game for the first round of the championship.

Why not play Bradley on the forty where he plays for his club

Graham is being talked up a bit by people on here about his brand of football and style but he was very lucky with Mullinalaghta. He had a great core of dedicated players there and no bench but they never picked up any major injuries. Kudos to his training regime there but it was plan A all the way. There was never a plan B. Rode his luck in the final too. They struggled to get past the Crokes 45 for much of that game. Their defense kept them in it. It's only when Crokes thought they had it in the bag and tried to play keep ball that they got turned over and imploded. But fair play to them. If you're going to get a period of dominance, the last 5 minutes of a tight game is the time to do it. Hopefully he'll bring some of that luck with him because we'll need some. And best of luck to them in the AI semi. I think they'll need some sort of plan B against Dr. Crokes so that game could be a good reflection of how he'll fare with some of the challenges he'll be facing with Cavan.

I don't think K.Clarke will be center half
I don't think M.Argue will be in the middle
I don't think M.Reilly will be on the half forward line
I don't think McVitty will be full forward
Is P.Smith ready to take up the wing half forward
I will be surprised if Caoimhin O'Reilly will be on the starting 15 but he should be on the bench for sure.
I expect N. McKiernan if he starts will be on the wing.

Hardtimes, thats very unfair. He took a team that hadnt won a Longford title Donkeys years to win it 3 years in a row. 2nd year gave a really good account of themselves in Leinster and 3rd year won it beating a Dublin club with multiples of the resources. If a manager cant be credited for that then I dont know what he has to do.

Agree with you there.Mickey did a fine job in Longford this past 3 years and deserves a lot of credit for it.
He was probably the best man from within the county for the Senior job after Mattie left.
In saying that he hadn't any success with a good gaels side a few years ago when he was over them for a year. But that was more than likely an internal problem.
He's brought a few lads back to the panel who seem willing to play for him and his style.
That can only be a plus.
His biggest job is to try and keep us in Div 1 which would be a big plus. Raising the standard of opposition can only be good if it's on a regular basis. Few seasons in Div 1 is a must for long term development as the squad is fairly young and keen.
Best of luck Mickey and the panel for the year ahead

you found it hard to find a place for Clarke...so you stuck him in one of the most important positions of center back?!!!!

Gerry Smith won't be fit for at least another month. He had an operation.
I'm also surprised at the amount of people not naming Conor Madden given he was our joint top scorer in the League. He's a confidence player and deserves a start. For what it's worth, my team would be....
Galligan
McLoughlin, Clarke, Killian Brady
Rehill, Faulkner, Holla
Argue, Galligan
Martin Reilly, Dara McVeety, Moynagh
Caoimhin O'Reilly, Jack Brady, Conor Madden

Moynagh to drop back as a single sweeper to allow the half back line to attack when needed.

I've left out McKiernan and Gerry Smith as they won't be fit.

I didn't think I was unfair Fred. I congratulated him on their achievements and wish him all the best going forward. He was very lucky with some of the young players there. Granard had a great team in Leinster schools a few years ago with many of those players. They had very few injuries which is lucky but I did credit him on training practices. And to keep them all motivated and together he obviously has something about them. But I don't buy into the national hype, the late late show appearances etc which may be influencing what others outside the county may be expecting from him and Cavan going forward. This job is a different kettle of fish and I'd be tempering expectations. And there's still the question mark of whether he can use a large panel, make telling subs and deploy different tactics. Obviously I hope he can.

It will be Mickey Grahams call on subs etc. But he has a backroom team around him, and that's why they are there. Jim Gavin didn't manage Dublin to 4 in a row on his own. He has over 20 in the background, Declan Darcy , Jason Sherlock advising him

John Denning was with Graham at Mullinalacghta. Dermot McCabe is there, though not sure how good of an impact he would have.

Mickey is a man that can win big games on the big day. Not too many managers in ulster can do that. It has been proven Kieran Mc Geeney cant do it and Rory Gallagher can do it as evidenced by last year. Hes a brilliant appointment. I wonder will paddy tally become a big game winner with Down another man that will be tested. There is a lot more to winning big games than luck e.g.. Tactics, preparation, mentality, psychology and Graham has passed those tests with Mullingachta and therefore has the abilities to pull off surprises.

I love your enthusiasm and I hope it rubs off but let's wait until the second week in March and see where we are at. Armagh have set their stall out saying their target is the last 8 can we hope that Cavan will make the last 8. Remember Cavan are division 1 team so their target has to be the last 8 considering Armagh's ambition??? Looking at the
McKenna Cup tonight I have to say these two teams will not be easy beat in any competition. Thankfully Cavan have only to play Tyrone in the League.
