Replying To sidelineview:  "Best of luck to the Cavan team, a big test on Sunday - it will let us know where we are but was anyone else surprised to read in the Celt last week where Mickey stated "we are probably a couple of years behind a lot of teams in ulster at the moment" (in terms of conditioning) - why ..? Surely the likes of G mK, dara mcvetty, killian clarke, martin reilly, p faulkner, c brady, c moynagh among others are not two years behind in strength and conditioning ..? If that's the case then it reflects very badly on the previous management team.

I would agree that new additions or returnees to the squad would be behind alright but your core players should be conditioned for inter county level. I hope this is not an thinly disguised excuse if things go pear-shaped this year. I have heard all these kind of reasons before - a young team, inexperienced etc. but that core group of players I have named (and there are obviously more) have been with Cavan a number of seasons so should have conditioning (and experience) to compete with the rest else we are in for a long hard season. Finally "behind a lot of teams in ulster" I would have said behind Tyrone, Donegal and Monaghan but not a lot of teams - its refreshingly honest but perhaps Mickey has now worked with the players, seen where we are and wants to dampen expectations!"
Easy way out don't you think maybe now they see the light and realise it's not all rosy in the garden. Same people not available and will make a miraculous recovery for the championship. Forget the championship for now Cavan need to stay in Division1 first and foremost. Then you can work on the championship. Should Cavan get relegated the management should get one more year and se if they can bring them right back up. Don't forget most of what they have in have been in and around the house over the last three years and are not new blood to the set up.
Are you saying by the way that Cavan are better than Derry Antrim Armagh Fermanagh Down if yes I am sorry to say you are in for a rude awakening.
Mickey trying to dampen expectations that will be a hard task here in Cavan.

Are Cavan better than two Division 4 teams and two Division 2 teams who don't and won't threaten promotion to D1?

Yes, the answer to that question is a definite yes!

The rest of your post, I can't make head nor tail of.

Any team news yet or when will it be announced?

Yes they are better, beat down twice last year in league, both Derry and Antrim in div 4??

I think if we could stay in Div 1 this year it would be classed as a major achievement . To me we are a top 12/14 team comfortable in Div 2 but in the bottom 2 in Div 1.
The confidence and experience that we could get by having a 2nd year in a row in Div 1 could work wonders for a young squad .
Playing at the top level is a priority for development as relegation knocks confidence .

I think he is trying to say a certain player has a broken arm and will make a recovery for the championship.

Please can we not start league off with we are there to build a team for 3 years down the road.
There is a solid core of players in the county developed under T Hyland, then dismantled under M M c Gleenan, where are those players. Solid Clarke, Faulkner, Mc Enroe, Gunner, Gearoid, Mackey, Reilly,Johnston that's the spine of the team. Mc Kiernan out, Galligan or Argue in?
What about all the other experienced players who won under 21s? Are they all left the scene or not committed or what?
Panel looks top heavy with young inexperienced players who had a good run in championship.
Good luck to Mickey Graham and Dermot Mc Cabe we need to consolidate our place in Division 1 and really progress and beat Monaghan Tyrone and Donegal in Ulster, that would be progress and stop the talk about we are ready to build another new team.

Really I laugh lets watch this space then. Off course teams are not in division ! but are in the Ulster championship.

Good luck to Mickey, by the way if we listen to what is been said for Sunday then Galway might as well stay at home for they are saying they Galway have no chance.
I pencilled in that Cavan would take a draw from this game and this is because Galway are slow starters in the league but do enough to stay up.
While you are at it where does one see Cavan picking up points from in this Division 1???? that will keep them up for 2020.

Replying To Hardtimes:  "Graham is being talked up a bit by people on here about his brand of football and style but he was very lucky with Mullinalaghta. He had a great core of dedicated players there and no bench but they never picked up any major injuries. Kudos to his training regime there but it was plan A all the way. There was never a plan B. Rode his luck in the final too. They struggled to get past the Crokes 45 for much of that game. Their defense kept them in it. It's only when Crokes thought they had it in the bag and tried to play keep ball that they got turned over and imploded. But fair play to them. If you're going to get a period of dominance, the last 5 minutes of a tight game is the time to do it. Hopefully he'll bring some of that luck with him because we'll need some. And best of luck to them in the AI semi. I think they'll need some sort of plan B against Dr. Crokes so that game could be a good reflection of how he'll fare with some of the challenges he'll be facing with Cavan."
I've read it all now. Mullinaghta rode their luck against Kilmacud - What else did you expect them to do? To even be in a position where luck could play a part was an achievement. Dunboyne, for example, are a huge Meath club littered with Meath panelists and some former Dublin panel members and Kilmacud beat them by 16 points!
Looking forward to the weekend now. Panel will be named Saturday morning and should be interesting. Lots of people saying Killian the Gunner not involved but the lads on We Are Cavan seem to think he is and you would imagine they would know with Damien Donohoe being involved with Mullahoran this year.

Galway slow starters? League finalists last year, promotion the year before.

Obviously don't know much about Galway so.... they were unbeaten in the league last year. I'm a big fan of Mickey but Cavan are up against it on Sunday as Galway still have plenty of talent to choose from. Salthill is no easy place to get a result

If we listen to what is being said for Sunday??

I've listened to Off the ball and the GAA Hour both do their league previews and every single panelist on both shows tipped Galway to beat us.

Who (outside of optimistic Cavan folk or cute Galway folk) is tipping Cavan to win?

The part of your comment about Galway starting slowly has already been picked apart so I won't elaborate further on that one.

Galway are difficult to beat in Pearse Stadium as they know how to play the wind there.
You will have 30/40 mile an hour wind there on Sunday.
Be lucky if either teams score 10 points .
Very difficult place to play football this time of year.

A scrappy dour affair is just the start we need to even the gap in quality.

Rumours from a good source involved with training Galway seems to think that they are not shaping up for a good start or in the right condition or frame of mind to hit the running in the league this year I hear..

Combination of hangover from last year and targeting beating the big teams at the business end of the c'ship.

Galway there for the taking in this game and Cavan not a bad team to stick in acca bet I would say based on this.

But if that is incorrect and they are playing at 85-90%, we are bet I'm afraid.

I think we can almost write of points against Dublin, Kerry & Tyrone this year. With the rest of winning chances being maybe:

Galway 40/60 (% chance of winning) 60% chance of losing
Monaghan 35/65
Mayo 30/70
Roscommon 50/50

I would think wins against Galway and Roscommon plus a surprise against Monaghan or Mayo are needed for us to stay up. And a fit and firing Gearoid McKiernan scoring 3 or 4 points from play for most of those possible wins is probably a necessity if we are to have any chance..

He was very good in the c'ship last year so hopefully this form will continue on his return and also that McVeety can reproduce last years league form as well, and you never know.

But the likelihood at the moment I would say, is that us and Roscommon will go down. So people should be prepared for that. If we do it in a competitive manner playing decent football and building towards a good c'ship, it won't be the end of the world.

Galway missing a few but they have had massive underage talent over the years and will have decent cover. McKiernan is a massive loss for us and we could struggle for scores without him. I think Shane Walsh is the one that could beat us on Sunday and will need careful watching. I wonder would it be worth trying Martin Reilly on him. Could free up Holla in the half backs and move him midfield maybe. Give us a bit more drive in that sector and he's good for a goal chance. I'd have Argue with him. Put some of the younger lads upfront but leave a bit more experience from midfield back. Don't care how ugly it is if we pick up points.

Galway have a new coach this year in Kevin Stritch and he comes highly rated so I expect big things from them. It's great to have the football back and for me the league offers way more excitement than the championship.

Of course it does.. nothing beats playing in 30mile an hour winds and getting soaked to the skin. And you won't even need sunglasses!!

My post was not on one year it was for both including the previous few years.
Galway are slow starters but pick up points here and there that keep them in this devision 1.
Got a text last night from a die hard Cavan supporter saying easy win for Cavan stating he knows whats going on, well good luck to him and the team. By the way if Cavan are relegated do you think this current management will do what Mattie did and bring them right back up??

They got promoted from division 2 the year before only losing one game so I'm not sure you know what you are talking about. Asking me if Cavan can rebound back up next year without seeing what other teams are in it is madness. Division 2 is the most competitive out of any other division and I think if Cavan were in it this year they would struggle to get promoted.
