I think a thread to follow any news on the process to appoint the new manager would be useful. stillaroyal (Meath) - Posts: 228 - 13/06/2022 12:51:44 2424607 Link 1 |

Agree it looks like an external manager needed. Still worth looking at how the new Ratoath management set up without their own guys work out. If they succeed in winning Keegan and Leinster they might be considered. Ashrules (Dublin) - Posts: 602 - 13/06/2022 13:24:44 2424629 Link 0 |

So we will wait until October then to see how they get on! Fits into the county boards timeline perfectly. They didn't bother to carry out a end of year review until five months after the county team finished up in 2022. Can anyone even come up with a list of who are realistic candidates from a within the county or b outside?

MOR looks like an ideal canidate for the job, however we may have plenty of competition to get the man. Expect 2/3 other counties will be on lookout also. If we want him we need to move asap and take the chance. This means putting the politics to one side for the good of Meath football, however, having observed the recent saga, its not looking good.

I totally agree, need to move quickly and give the new manager the opportunity to put a new team in place and have them observing the club championships at all levels not just at senior.

Yes indeed useful for supporters to have a means to express CONCERNS even . I think it is perfectly legitimate to express views . I totally accept the personal abuse reported aimed at Andy and his family is totally unacceptable. But then we need to discuss what is personal abuse and what is criticism regarding performance. I believe "personal" is attacking the person or their integrity....thats a no go . I have NEVER seen that allowed on this forum. i have seen criticism of performance in relation to football matters .that is acceptable because that is performance related on the field of play .A good example here is where a player is substituted during a match where it is perceived he is under performing . No player likes that yet it is accepted, and rightly so . Whats the difference between that and a manager or his team being identified as underperforming ? The player will have to walk off in front of maybe thousands of people!!! I think where a team are seen as not up to standard in key skills in performance for a prolonged period without any apparent correction then questions will be asked by supporters and rightly so .That is perfectly legitimate ! Ideal if their can be a constructive criticism. Even our own Sean Boylan got his share of it about his selections of players etc. It was said he was mad to move players like Gerathy and Brendan Reilly from defence to attack. Then those that remember will agree we need another "mad" man.Did i believe that the word "mad" used in that context was a personal attack on Sean ...certainly not !!. It was questioing his judgement on playing and performance matters. Sean won that one ! Not winning whilst trying your best is disappointing and of course has to have a human dimension. If .thats not enough you can do no more and certainly no reflection on your person or character . I dont even think its about having a thick skin, but more about not taking comments about performance as personal but rather about how you are "doing things" .a world of difference ! My CONCERN is that i wonder are the CB ready to learn and update their thinking about the role of manager ,and embark on the critical task of finding the right person and NOT take the easy option. This is even a business and they are the employer !

Couldn't possibly agree with this type of dalliance. What happens if it doesn't work out? We will again be 'Johnny Last' in the hunt for a new management team. No, go NOW, the vacancy is there, fill it while there are more candidates available than later on AND the new team have an opportunity to survey fringe talent in the upcoming championships.

Hey Joe, here's a list i provided on another thread last week Looked I'm not sure what the next steps will be and who will be the next person in. Internally Colm O'Rourke - i think is no longer suitable for the role. I think he struggles with the modern game and will be out thought by the better managers of today. I also don't think he'd go for the role so it's a non runner. - Out of the running already o'Bric/ McCarthy - allow them to work with their underage teams, there's a system there, let it develop. Maybe bring in McCarthy in 2024 as part of the backroom team and O'Bric in 2025 if tat's what they want to do. Farrell/Reilly - As someone else said we could be in a worse position doing this. I know they've won senior and intermediate titles, but doing it at intercounty level is a whole different thing. They could be very much out of their depth and we'd waste more time. I'd be happy to see them involved with a ticket and developing. Robbie Brennan - was involved with john McCarthy and the U20's this year and i dunno how much input he had but McDermott - Is he the hot name after bringing Tones from almost nowhere to a county title, if he could replicate things with them this year then he's a live contender. Lar Wall - couldn't get Kells over the line in the championship so is he really going to do it for Meath Anthony Moyles - hasn't really any pedigree at club level and would he give up his media gig and columns Externally Jim Gavin/ Jimmy McGuinness/ Eamonn Fitzmaurice - pie in the sky, there's no way they'd take the job. The first two don't need any more involvement in the GAA. Fitzmaurice isn't going to travel up from Kerry 3-4 times a week Mick Deegan/ Paul Curran/ Paul Clarke/ Declan D'Arcy/Jason Sherlock - I know many won't want a Dub but these guys have worked with Jim Gavin. Clarke managed the second team to o'byrne cups so why not see if they 're interested in coming on board. Curran has managed Ballymun to county titles and and helped bring Thomas davis back to relevance. He's working with Dunshaughlin so Navan/ Dunganny isn;t that much further ;) Davy Burke - very good mind for the game, worked across multiple counties and is highly regarded. This might be your candidate. Malachy O'Rourke - is the outstanding candidate for the position. If he's interested and i hope the county board are already sounding him out then this should be a very short race. He got Fermanagh to Ulster finals, won Ulster with Monaghan and would stabalise the team immediately. Has managed at the very highest level and kept Mongahan in the top 7-8 teams in the country operating with about 1/3 of the population of Meath. He plays a decent brand of football but coming from Ulster could help us both defensively and with our biggest issue, breaking the blanket defence and packed area's which we simply are unable to deal with. Monaghan as a team were always supremely fit, well conditioned and strong. This has tailed off in Meath and needs to be addressed. brian (Meath) - Posts: 2000 - 13/06/2022 16:10:47 2424733 Link 3 |

It does seem that Malachy would be a popular choice .Plus the Fact that Colm has ruled himself out as expected at least for the role of manager. Question ....would you then be satisfied that everything that could be done is done to rectify mistakes of the past incl the CB role ? The quick fix is attractive but has build in pitfalls. What happens if say Malachy or whoever leaves in 6 months ? Would it not be better to have the CB take stock of itself , its attitude to the role and its importance. Inform itself on establishing standards of accountibility in full discussion with the potential manager. Attitude, accountibility and policy review. I believe it is a culture change thats needed .Not just take that tablet and it will be alright I think it demontrates the difference betwee attitude and behaviour. an ounce of attitude change is worth a ton of behaviour change . Yes slower and frustrating buts thats what happens after periods of inaction or neglect Where there is a will there is a way,and maybe the CB have done considerable soul searching already as they cannot be to happy with events . I completely understand the desire not to miss the bus . I will take the risk in the longer term interest and for the benefit of future managers if we havent moved beyond the status quo. Yes i am using this forum to pressurise the CB in the longer term interest of Meath football as i certainly dont want more of the same .!

Colm orurke rules himself out due in part to abuse Andy got. Will Malachy take it knowing the poison that so called Meath supporters spout. ? royaldunne (Meath) - Posts: 19449 - 13/06/2022 18:30:16 2424788 Link 0 |

Well Royaldunne, while I totally agree that there is no place for the personal abuse Andy or any other manager gets, but in my opinion Colm o Rourke didnt want the job in the first place. While a true legend on the pitch for Meath, I dont think he wanted to give up his number in RTE and put himself in the firing line as Meath boss.He is entitled to do what he wants which is fair enough and good luck to him but it's a pity because he would have the respect of most Meath people and knows the Meath club scene very well.On the abuse scene no matter where you go you will have it unfortunately,Just looked at Bonner in Donegal he got abused as well.Im sure other counties have the same problem as well. Its not right but you go anywhere as a manager unfortunately you will have to listen to a certain few idiots and fools. On M o Rourke would be great to him but I'd say Donegal (imagine Bonner will step aside)will be in for him so I'd imagine he would go there because they have a better chance of winning things and plus would be nearer to his home(well he is managing Glen in Derry as far as I know).

I suppose we can only hope that whoever gets it will not warrant too much criticism thats performance related . the rest is not on anyway. Colm rejected 3 times ,and id say he d be like anybody else he say Ah no enough is enough maybe my views are not wanted.

It would be different for Malachy O Rourke in that he isn't from Meath and doesn't live there. He wouldn't have to listen to noise . FoolsGold (Cavan) - Posts: 2950 - 13/06/2022 21:46:25 2424835 Link 1 |

Absolutely you're right nobull, the senior manager won't solve everything and nor should they. Reform is need everywhere and starts at county board level and becoming more professional. Look at what Dublin did over 25 years ago with John Costelloe and how things have changed for them since and we're not even at that stage. This piecemeal attitude of we'll do something and hope it sticks needs to change. The whole county is in a mess at club, county, infrastructural and financial levels. As you rightly say until that changes then we're at nothing at all and fumbling about in the dark hoping to find the exit door.

my read of his main reason for ruling himself out...and its no lesser a worrying reason...is because he was rejected 3 Times...Christ lads ....that is the really scary fact, that someone like him put his name forward, and our elders decided he was fit for purpose...id love to know more about those details

Three man commitee chosen to choose new manager, clubs have till the 20th June to nominate somebody (must have written consent)for the job.It will be interesting to see who puts their name forward.I hope the county board are also looking outside the county as to leave no stone unturned to find the right person for the job. Absolutely ......Thats exactly my point . I fully agree Dublin CB set the standard on and OFF the field .Yes it took a while but it certainly paid off .I SUPPORT Meath but i ADMIRE Dublin for their vision and how they established the culture where mickey mouse measures are completely runduntant. Much more professional approach urgently required, and thats the REAL issue . Any quick fix measure without this new approach is a recipe for more of the same which for me is totally unacceptable. Any new manager needs to know now that there is fresh thinking at the top and that he will be a key figure in its implementation, and as you say those tablets have to be administered to key people at various levels. Some body here said a week end workshop might be a good idea . Thats the HOW the new message can be delivered and can be disussed. There is no doubt WHAT that message has to be in my view. STANDARDS at all levels Establish and maintain . STRUCTURED timely reviews CORRECTIVE action in line with objectives.including coaching to cover identified needs and have a direct relationship between coaching, training sessions and on field performance. Yes the players have a big reponsibility to improve their own standards. i believe they will in a set up where top standards are seen and driven .from the top down.
