He also mentioned the abuse as a reason behind not going. Article is on hoganstand from his comments on rte

Id say you could draw your own conclusions on that Colm has a bad habit of asking" awkward". questions based on common sense . That can be seen as too challenging and uncomfortable. It may even threaten the powerbase ! We can do without being freshened up.type thing .were grand as we are!
I think he should be approached to come on board as a consultant/ advisor to the CB to do precisely that freshen up,challenge the status quo, with the objective of raising standards at every level .Starting with a serious stock taking exercise. The punch line is i do believe the CB know that needs to happen now.O Rourke type is the ideal resource . We wont mention review we just call it stock taking if that sounds better. So he does not want to be manager for the reasons given. He would be a good resource to have in selecting one though

In fairness to COR he has been consistant in his stance over the years, he went for position on 2/3 occassions and his face for whatever reason did not fit. Never going to put himself through all that again. Realises his time has come and gone, would have loved to see him get the chance, gave so much to Meath football over many years and deserved a shot at top job.

I think when he mentioned his wife saying no way are you going for that was the pivotal point imo. Family been brought into the abuse. Like andys son and daughter even Cora and sean mentioned it.
The question is who would want that cr@p ?
On at least one of the occasions when he was brought in for interview if I recall correctly he didn't even mention the job just structural aspects of cb etc. Tommy dowd said that's fair enough Colm but that's not why we are here, would you like to
Put ur case for management forward Colm? And he responded no. Forgive me if I haven't got that verbatim but it was a article down by Meath chronicle at the time. Can't think of journalist might have been lynch. It was the time mod got the position , they interviewed him mod and geraghty , think there was also someone else.

So he didn't mention the abuse ? And how his wife was against him going for it over the abuse Andy got ? Why try to whitewash what he actually said ??

ABUSE versus CRITICISM.. It would be a pity if the use of these words become a distraction. Its seems to me that the word abuse is often used on this forum instead of criticism as a means of labelling..I suggest there is a massive difference between the 2. ABUSE is aimed at the person and the intent is meant to be hurtful thus NEVER acceptable and no place in sport. To be CRITICAL is totally different and has a different intent.CRITICISMl offers an opinion about how things are done or not done by a person or group and has the intent of being constructive and trying to improve things and "how things are done or not done" a world of difference. I have NEVER seen ABUSE allowed on this forum. Any manager who thinks they will not be criticised is not living in the real world and is not management material anyway. I do believe any manager will never be made to measure for a new management role initially .They have to "find their feet" and are fully entitled to this period. A good manager will show a willingness to learn and improve on an on going basis. It can be very easy to cross the wires on this one. Some may even take offence where none was intended. As someone said here not too long ago "we are all human and make mistakes" We have to remember that also !

Maybe it's just me but there was a part of me that thought COR was not saying outright no to the job but he would need to be approached and convinced this time. Ciaran whelan did an article about how Colm would be the right man, I find it hard to believe he wrote that without touching base with Colm.

CB may not like his qs and stature but I think it's needed now, we have tried the structure for years with little success, I'd like to see someone come in like Colm as he would bring a lot of the county together and certainly give the players a lift. He would need a good coaching ticket with him but if you could convince him then he's not a bad option.

Could have it backwards and he's not interested but just you don't know.

I'd say his domestic situation would have a critical bearing on the role of manager so time consuming. A family decision and rightly so ! I would still invite him in on a project basis as consultant to assist on meeting current needs including preparing for all aspects of appointing a new management team and setting standards going forward.I believe he would be a very valuable resource . Fully equipped and familiar with the scene. No better man to meet a call or need. I clearly recall sitting in the Cusack for the All ireland final against Down in 1991. Drama leading up to the final O Rourke ruled out on medial grounds by the doctor. Into the 2nd half Meath 11 points down. On comes ORouke to massive applause. What could even he do? He showed us what true grit and fighting spirit is all about. What is meant by pride in the jersey, He orchestrated what was one of many great fightbacks and almost won .We were beaten by 2 points. The team were a credit to themselves and the county by the work they did to get the ball up to the forwards. I clearly recall o Rourke outfielding 3 Down defenders at the same time to get the ball to Bernard Flynn who scored a brilliant point Bernard showed his class that day as did Brian Stafford A dub beside me remarked "ORourke jez hes some man out of a sick bed..
Its ironic that 2 great Meath servants O Rourke and Flynn may have some strained relationship with the CB as suggested. I dont know if thats the case, or the background .If it is fix it .Those men should be honoured for their contribution to Meath. Sean Boylan was honoured and rightly so. Another great resource .We just need to use them .

I'd sat COR has gotten far more abuse for his work as a pundit.

Any chance you'd stop going on and on and on about the "abuse"? A few letters and one tweet questioning the financing of a flight. I'd say many more successful managers have suffered worse. You can't defend former management for their record so now you want to irrationally focus on the "abuse".

In addition, everyone around here has been reading your actual abuse of MOD for the past 8 years for seemingly no other reason than he lost to a county where you reside.

What he said is he actively sought the job on 3 occasions years ago and because the county board didn't want him back then he won't be actively seeking the role again.
He never said what his reaction would be if he was approached by the county board.
Whatever about now I find it amazing that he applied 3 times years ago and never got the role, with all due respect to the managers that came in in the decade after Sean Boylan it should have been a no brainer to bring in Colm O'Rourke as manager back then, back then all the players would have remembered his superb exploits/ leadership playing for Meath and a lot of the younger players would have previously won titles with Colm at schools level.
I personally would still be happy to see him given an opportunity to see what he could do as Meath manager, I know the game has changed in recent years but Colm is a smart guy, I think he could do well.

Wow. The fact you are condoning the abuse of a man and his family says a lot more about you than me.
As for stopping? No NEVER, the day good people like me bow down to keyboard warriors who'd **** their trousers if they thought Andy or Shane knew who they were like you is day never.

Bernard Flynn is in for the Meath job. I am really not sure CV wise what he has done to warrant getting the job so we will see. As Cian ward rightly said manager at senior intercounty should have a CV to match not to take it on and learn.

I view it that the CB are the employer . I assume they have put a full job description indicating the role requirements together .. Like any other job a short list of suitable candidates for the role may be interviewed . Thus in the initial period anyone can apply if that job description is not available at this point. As i have agitated for in previous posts the CB need to be clear itself about the type and skillset required at this point. Its not solely about WHO applies for the job ,but rather about HOW that person would fill the needs of the job. In the first instance the employer has to inform and update its thinking on the role, and equip itself fully with the appropriate selection process required. i

If he brings the backroom team he had at u21 level with him, I'd be happy to see him given a go. Sometimes a manager just needs to be the facilitator and motivator (like Alex Ferguson) while the staff do the coaching and the tactics. He had Shane Supple on board for eg, an excellent goalkeeping coach. I also like Flynn's mentality towards Meath football, he stil has that 1980s ruthlessness.

The game has long changed and ruthlessness, which Andy had in abundance; isn't enough. Flynns ticket for underage would not have had nearly enough (bar supple) experience for senior mens intercounty. We have all had our fill of Andy's passion while seemingly having little tactical plan with the ball etc

I think we need both not one or the other. In my opinion we need a manager with proven management experience at inter county level as well as a top class backroom team at his disposal. This is probably the most important appointment since Sean Boylan left - I know we could say that every time but we have a Leinster winning minor team followed by an All Ireland winning minor team now coming through with hopefully some other teams following. There has to be at least some talent coming through there. The new manager needs to work closely with under 20 manager to develop these players, first for under 20 and then through to the senior team.

I am sure Bernard would work closely with the under 20 management but I am not sure if he has enough experience at the cut and thrust of game management at inter county level, player development and tactics. To me this is needed just as much as 1980's ruthlessness if not more. As someone mentioned above, a full job spec needs to be clarified by the CB and approach it like any significant managerial vacancy. Just because you are a high achieveing player does not make you a top class manager as we have seen in many sports.

I still maintain at this point nobody can be ruled in or out. All i know about Bernard Flynn is he was a top class forward that does not owe Meath football anything.I know nothing about his skills as a motivator or facilitator which are key skills i agree. In horse racing language maybe we might yet have a course and distance winner amongst the entrants.. I assume CB will be looking at succession planning for the role in the future opening up possibilities for otherwise worthy applicants to be in the running. as backroom or whatever. Again i firmly believe the ball is firmly at the feet of the CB to learn from mistakes , move forward, bring people on board, mend fences if they are broken etc. etc. Most important keep the eye on the ball in( 1 ) Knowing WHAT they are looking for in terms of needs and 2 Selecting the right person to fill those needs. I assume they have done massive work to get their act together, and will not be distracted by anything . They have got the honour of representing the county ,and im sure they are now fully wound up to deliver on the responsibility that goes with that honour.
