Need to know who these high level people are. We were spun a yarn about more people been added after initial back room team were announced. It never happened. I do hope we get in some good coaches. We desperately need them.

Time will tell and interesting if that is the case. Eivers and Garrigan would have been the most accomplished of that management team and given that we finished the year winning the Tailteann cup I would have thought you'd build off the momentum of it

I said it from Day 1 - why we had 2 ladies football coaches in was beyond me!! Totally different beast to the ladies game (in a bad way may I add!!) and if I was manager of Meath going into last year I would have known that straight up and got a top level experienced coach that knows how to play the men's game. Thats what concerns me about the thought process of COR!! JonnieG (Meath) - Posts: 254 - 21/08/2023 14:00:06 2501608 Link 2 |

Would have thought so. We all heard there was tension in the camp. But that is in every management set up. So unless something happened that wasn't expected it's a strange situation we find ourselves in. I wish both well and thank them for their efforts. But there was a worry about S&C during league. We were way off the pace of other teams, and our defense was non existent. So maybe we will see a huge improvement in both this year under new back room team

Could be a good addition. Also I think a number 2 should be added to the management and for me that would be Gillespie. Won't happen as he is committed to summerhill and let's be honest he probably doesn't fit the type of people that manager would want around.

Wow this might be one of the worst takes I've ever seen on this forum and that says a lot. Eugene Ivers is a lecturer in strength and conditioning, he did the s&C with Donegal under Jim McGuinness when they won the All Ireland. The new s&C coach wouldn't stand a chance by your reasoning, he's never worked an inter county men's team. He's only worked as full time s&C coach for a professional team. Garrigan won 3 All Ireland's in a row with a high performing team, he won two Men's county championships last year as a coach. If you speak to anyone who's worked with him you will know he's a top level coach. Both of them were far more qualified than the three who remain as part of the management team. Cian O'Neill lives in Cork. Jim McGuinness? Might as well try get Jim Gavin in. Get in a northern lad to bring a defensive system, only the nordies know how to setup teams defensively sure. While were at it we need to get in a coach from Kerry to coach the players how to kick properly & a coach from Mayo to coach the players how to carry the ball as long as they've never worked in ladies Gaelic football.

Why the hell would Cian O'Neill leave Galway to come to us. Also yes the ladies game is different but Eivers was involved with Jim McGuinness previously, Garrigan was involved with the Wexford club champions last year. And the style the ladies played was a modern, mass defense, quick counter attack style, which was not the style the men played with last year which makes me think Garrigan didn't get the input he thought he would (and which we need)

Both seemed to have excellent cvs. Was it a clash of personalities maybe ?

I dont think being a lecturer in S&C makes you a great FOOTBALL coach :). you are not really getting the point here and maybe thats the issue with a lot of people in the county. And I dont care how may All Irelands in a row the other guy won - unless it was with a Senior intercounty mens team is doesn't matter...apples and oranges!! Look at Kerry - things started going down hill so they bring back Jack OC! and when they realized the reason they weren't winning All irelands was because of their defense they bring in a top defensive coach....... from the North!! And guess what...they started winning AIs again!!! Dublin bring back Pat Gilroy ad they start winning AIs again!! you are obviously happy to leave things as is....If you are happy competing for Tailteann Cups well yes - fill your backroom team with inexperienced football coaches but if you want to aspire to competing for Leinsters and AIs then you need to take a step up and have at least one top level experienced coach with you. And it looks like maybe COR thinks that now since he dropped the 2 boys!! So Im hoping he has a few big names coming in. I am not dismissing the ability of the 2 lads whatsoever but they are just short of the experience as Senior intercounty mens level IMO. Who knows...maybe you will see Ivers ack in the Donegal setup now .. but as a S&C coach and nothing else! Mcguinness will be all over the football side of things! Its the players who win matches and good coaches will improve a team. There are many senior teams in the county where those coaches would make little difference. A poor sideline decision can loose a match - Kells should know that!! browncows (Meath) - Posts: 2342 - 22/08/2023 18:24:44 2501829 Link 12 |

That raises interesting questions . I agree coaching has not been good enough so far on this development curve I believe Colm O Rourke knows that. The big question then is why is that the case .Alowing for the fact that a lot of new players have come in which is a factor of course .Two other reasons come into focus .1 the coaches are not good enough and unlikely to improve through learning as we go or 2 They have the potential to improve and are restrained too much in trying to imput as required .If that is the case then Colm O Rourke has to question his style of management. He carries the can in both situations. I dont know whether its no 1 or no 2 scenario applies here. I am inclined to believe Colm would hardly buy a dog and bark himself. A great Player yes! As manager too early to say at this level . Can he delegate and oversee in a balanced way ? I dont know yet at this level . I sense that through some posts here some posters never wanted Colm .He was guilty till proven innocent anyway and still is. in their eyes .I support Colm O Rourke and his team . I dont feel any less of a supporter by questioning critical areas like coaching standards .Perhaps he is dealing with this shortcoming in the only way possible Either way this is all about learning for all ......otherwise whats the point if continuous improvement is the objective ?

Ivers was the s&c coach for Meath not a football coach.! So yes being a lecturer in s&c is completely relevant to his role! He had nothing to do with coaching football, I'm not sure where you got that idea that he was? He wasn't even involved as a football coach with the ladies team. Barry O'Callaghan was Colms number 2 this year and main coach, he hasn't any senior inter county experience as a coach. Stephen Bray was the other selector, also no inter county experience as a coach. Paul Garrigan was far more experienced than both but was not afforded the same input as the other 2, nor was he involved dropping lads off the panel on the way home from matches. After the league went so badly he was given more freedom in putting a defensive structure in place, I think that went pretty well with the imporvement in the team. I'm not happy with where Meath are. I think if another coach is brought in, the manager and selectors are going to have to make serious concessions and hits to their egos to allow them to make the impact that they need to. Garrigan wasn't a yes man and that's why it didn't work out. I agree with you getting in an experienced coach, I think we need 2 at least and also a change in selectors or their roles to see any real change.

Yes I have heard this about garrigan before. I know nothing about him. But surely the last thing this Meath team is a yes man ? And for that surely he was worth his spot. Also agree re selector's, now we need a whole new approach going forward

Yes agree! I dont see any benefit with the guys that are there at all. As others are saying COR is just making sure nobody out-shines him in the Meath camp! I think he has shot himself in the foot with that and maybe he realises that now by lookig for new coaches! But as you said - he is getting rid of the wrong people!! I would say that however good Garrigan is respected - i still think a top top coach is a must - maybe a coach like that wont be afraid to say no to COR!!

I would be hesitant to say this is a big boost to Meath football. If it were Conor Nash coming home I would be over the moon because before he left he had proven at adult level he was a really impactful player. McBride has the raw tools athletically but he was fairly unrefined as a football before he left and now he's out of practice on top of that. Hopefully he is home to play the regional championship that would be a good test for him and there's always place for a 6 foot 5 lad who is mobile and can field a ball. But I think it might take him a while to get up to county level in terms of the skills of the game
