New Meath Manager

Replying To bdbuddah:  "Last 2 years were bad but taken as a whole I'd argue overall Andy did well as Meath manager. We mightn't like it but in last 2 decades we ususlly are not in division 1. Andy first Meath manager to get us there (for only 1 year I know) and then backed this up by getting to super 8's. He was also seemed to up our preparation in terms of fitness."
Unfortunately bdbuddah, that was 3 year ago, and everything after 2019 has been nothing short of an unmitigated disaster, and lets not forget 2019 included an 19 point Leinster final defeat where we scored 0-4. As you say he did improve things up to 2019, but since then everything has gone backwards at such an alarming rate it's scary to thing when it might stop sliding.

Looked time might show us that was the best we could've achieved or hoped for and reflect well on Andy.

But we're here to talk about the new person coming in.

Replying To Proudroyal:  "Well No bull, you make a valid point there alright most jobs that are advertised will say 2/3 years experience required etc or whatever or this criteria to be met before you get a chance to be interviewed as to maximize the quality (on paper at least)of candidates looking for the job.It is professional to do this as you rightly say but what would you have as a minimum requirement?Inter county success?,at least a club county championship maybe two? That would be the danger part would you rule someone out just because they didn't win a county final say they lost it by a last kick of a ball.Take Lar wall (I'm not saying he should get the job just making a point) he was seconds away from winning it with Kells but got suckerpunched with a last gasp goal so that would rule him out of the job but say Brian Farrell (again just using him as an example)he could get the job but is their much difference between them as a manager or coach?again I'm not saying Farrell or wall should get the job but would you rule someone out who with a bit of luck would be a county champion etc.Aim high by all means and if we get a top manager happy days but I dont know about what the criteria should be for the job that is .I'd do get your point the more professional you are the more likely you are to get quality people interested but you could also lose someone very good who just hasn't reached a certain requirement just yet."
Thats exactly why the wording of the job description is critical. It should seek to be all embracing Technical skills relating to football matters incl composition of backroom selection etc carry considerable weighting but record of achievement at high level is the mearement. Here i do mean Inter county (at any level makes you eligbe for entry) as a minimum
BUT that alone is NOT enough. A candidate must demonstate a record of achievement in Man management.,forward planning, problem solving ,teambuilding etc.. Critically he would instill and maintain a culture where self and team responsibility is uppermos,t, where excuses and blaming are seen a short coming , where a can do attitude is fostered, and where victimhood is seen as an excuse ( poor me or us for example bad luck etc Can do attitude instead you make your own luck end of story .Cuture of accountability describe how you maintain. How would you structure a training session, and how would you evaluate it.how would you evaluate coaching success? How would you measure real progess not just in footballing terms but measure how players benefit overall to reduce drop out levels where possible. With time these questions can be reduced down to bullet point where the candidate has the opportunity to make the running. The general trust is to demonstate that to TAKE US FROM HERE will primarily require very strong personal in built qualities where delegation is not an issue Really those qualities carry the heavier weighting .good coaching and tactical awareness etc.can be overseen by the manager. I do accept there may be a need for screening interviews leading to selection interview where candidates will have the opportunity though hindsight to put their best foot forward with his own fully prepared presentation to demontrate how he might fill the need. May sound long winded to some but given time its meets the objective of stock taking and hopefully attracting real candidates where ideally they know whats wanted and they know whats expected .Achievement claims supported by specific verifiable examples to try to reduce tendency to "spoof"
I suggest about 6 or 7 well structured open ended questions would be very informative for selection .I attach particular importance to "where we are now " approach to questioning.

Well Bdbuddah, I dont really want to go back over Andy's time as manager as most points have already been written but as you have brought it up ,If it came across as me having a go at Andy I assure you I'm not.Ive already said on here fair play to him and thanks for all he did.My point was Andy had a very good CV and it didnt work out in the end so is a good CV the be all and end all? I dont know.As you rightly say he did improve us in the first couple of years and got us to division 1 and super eights and with a bit of luck, better refs decision on occasions and better decisions by some players we could have beaten a couple of top teams. Our fitness improved no doubt in the first couple of years but the last couple of years we haven't looked as fit.Now whether that is us standing still or other teams ramping it up I'm not sure but we looked out on our feet alot this year.Although we lost all league games in division 1 bar the one draw we were competive in most games but fell away near the end of matches.Andy got us climbing the mountain but the last couple of years we have slid back down it.Judge Andy on the first couple of years yes he improve us,made us better but judge him on the last couple of years you would have to say we are at a standstill if not going back. You are judged on the here and now and unfortunately the last couple of years haven't been good enough. The next manager who comes in may do no better, maybe worse and then Andy might be judged a bit differently who knows but all we can do is judge on what we have seen.I think are next manager will have to be given time.My worry is say we go with someone who hasn't got alot of experience and thinks dont go great will the county board buckle under the pressure. If for arguments sake we got Jim Galvin,Malachy o Rourke or Jim McGuinness (just using as an example)proven winners they will have more in the bank and might be able to fight off us having a bad year where if say Bernard flynn gets it he wont have that proven winner thing to fight with, so for me whoever gets it must be given time but unfortunately it's a results business will he?

Flynn would be a disaster and set us back even further, unless he's just the face of it and has an extremely experienced backroom team

Replying To nobull456:  "I view it that the CB are the employer . I assume they have put a full job description indicating the role requirements together .. Like any other job a short list of suitable candidates for the role may be interviewed . Thus in the initial period anyone can apply if that job description is not available at this point. As i have agitated for in previous posts the CB need to be clear itself about the type and skillset required at this point. Its not solely about WHO applies for the job ,but rather about HOW that person would fill the needs of the job. In the first instance the employer has to inform and update its thinking on the role, and equip itself fully with the appropriate selection process required. i"
id go far as to suggest that The CB, and this Committee should put a Prospectus together, and go to a number of potential Candidates , ma7be 4, 5 , and the Candidates decide as to whether they are interested or not
The Interview should be the other way round....We think this is a Plum Job...its not...the individuals scrambling to out their names forward without even knowing what the Plan or strategy is from either the CB or the 3 Man Committee , should be ruled out immediately....they are either delusional, or money grabbers...but one way or another they couldn't seriously consider taking on the Job at this juncture , without the Facts..... The right Candidates tshould be interviewing the CB and interrogating the Plan , Vision & Strategy of the 3 man appointment Committee

Not a hope they are made available, as much chance as one of us being next manager

Be shocked if flynn got it. Walking away from the u20s shows a lack of professionalism in my opinion regardless of Andy not releasing players.

Replying To royaldunne:  "Know Bernard well. I'd consider him a friend and I'm sure he would feel the same way about me. We haven't met up as much since covid. I'll tell him to his face what I will say here (I'm not one of the many faceless keyboard warriors on here with a agenda). He would need a extremely good back room team behind him, he had a bad run at shamrocks but that shouldn't exclude him. Again he would need something similar to the back room team he had when he went for 20s. He'd no doubt have graham Reilly (fellow cilles man) probably graham geraghty, Robbie O'Malley, and Supple. But I think we need a tactician in there too. So be interesting to see who else he may have."
Why is that back room for the 20e being talked about as sufficient? Graham reilly has no experience coaching near the level, Graham has some but they were the two big names. It's not enough experience to kick us on

We have all rightly lamented the lack of tactics with the ball and kick outs or strategy around free takers…I'm sorry but Flynn with a back room team of ex players with no experience at senior intercounty or track record of success would be ridiculous. You won't find many Meath men as passionate as Andy was or as ruthless, many hated his sideline theatrics but they were from a place of passion, we can't go down the same road again.

Andys backroom team was no where near top class.getting a team fitter is just a given.to put that as progress is not much of an argument.
Passion joe soap can have that.be a motivator have tactical prowess, man magement, create an environment where young men flourish.thats the type of man that is needed.unite the county have an honest dressing room no agendas.pick on merit.pick horses for courses.happy camp will give us hope.bring in coaches with knowledge, football brains, ambitious in there approach.make players better year in year out.3 year plan.

Pretty much what I said really proud? Andy didn't have the tactical side or back room team to address so let's not go down same road?

That makes a lot of sense. I think it will come down to approaching candidates A screening interview to use by the CB to tell all applicants about exactly whats needed and listen to the applicants initial respone. Then select for a 2nd interview where the applicant has clear knowledge of what is needed. and given the opportunity to make a formal presentation about how he would meet those clearly identified needs ,and how he would identify and select his backroom team to assist him with same. I dont think the required can be covered in one meeting . Meeting might be a better name than interview in the circumstaces. Everything depends on the CB LEADING by providing an appropriate Job description for the role. Let the applicants have a copy to digest and respond.

Not saying either way. I presume both Graham's were there to install motivation and drive, and both were selectors. I did say in my original post we'd need more along with those. Biggy does coach and has his coaching training done, so I guess he has to start somewhere, like coyle , Kelly etc did. geraghty has been there before as has O'Malley. Both would be held in high esteem, the more people we can get the better. Look at dubs and lately Kildare very little experience in training in some of those . Again though my personal choice at this stage would be Malachy orurke. Nothing against Bernie but i think we need someone with that perspective and authority that can say been there done that, and it's my way or the high way. May sound harsh but that's how I see it.

100%.....the awful fact here is the "employer" has no track record of Building a Successful Strategy or Plan...so how in the lords name could any serious Candidate put their hand u p without questioning these Guys as to why This time will be different?...all the hard question have to be asked internally first...otherwise any really competent candidate will ask them....and there wont be any answers

Ah RD "has to start somewhere", senior intercounty is not the place to cut your teeth even if he is your clubman.

Yes Sean proved there can be an exception to the rule . He demonstrated what top class man management skillls can do. Some say "ah that was different times" Yes different game but man magement skills are as important now as they ever were. He was a willing learner, made mistakes but generally he learned from them. Would like to see him onboard as an advisor in the present circumstances.
