New Meath Manager

=================================================================================================

Tis amazing that you and I and so many can see things and where they're headed, that the county board are about to waste another batch of talented players (which they have done with the 2012 minor team) and yet the county board seems to be absolutely oblivious to what is obvious to Stevie Wonder.

Its a very sad state of affairs we're finding ourselves in and unfortunately i think some within the executive will happily continue to watch the slide into irrelevance continue.

Look at the players we've lost from the county to other sports - Nash and McBride to AFL, Oisin McCloskey to Rugby, several young lads to soccer. the days of Gaelic football being king in Meath are rapidly disappearing. Will we continue to lose lads to other sports form those minor teams coming through, will lads on the senior panel want to hang around. Take Jordan Morris who's already transferred to Kingscourt, would he consider a move to Cavan too?

We're right on the precipice at the moment ready to be tipped over the edge. Its that serious in my eyes. And the wrong appointment now could be the fatal blow."
Agree with all that Brian, it's critical now. It's more important than the 2012 bunch as there is a few successful teams en route not just the one team.

While I'm being negative saying it could fall over quickly I do think we could see the team on the right path quickly with the right appointment. Just don't ask me who that is!!!

Can't verify it or if it's true but heard Barry Callaghan last night

Yep again I'd agree with that ;) Right appointment, lift the mood music around the sqaud and they could take leaps and bounds. Look at Derry, got it right with Gallagher and have rapidly and dramatically improved.

That would be a hugely underwhelming appointment.

I know Barry has worked hard at underage and stepped into the breach last year with Sean Kelly after Bernard left, but he's not really had any track record at underage or any success with a club. Please correct me if that's incorrect, i can't remember anything.

This would really ring true of we shot for the stars (Fitzmaurice et al), fooled you all into think we give a damn, and you're getting someone who's now going to be under our control.

If I'm Keoghan, Menton or those lads from 2012, I think that would be my twitter retirement speech being prepared.

Agree with every last bit of it. As I said I can't verify it and we are in an info vacuum at the moment as the 3 lads have clammed up so we can hope it's just a rumour but let's see

As i said yesterday Joe, you're credible in my eyes and there's no smoke without fire.

An appointment like that is so like this county board, it makes too much sense for it not to be true.

I agree it would be an underwhelming appointment but no more underwhelming than if Flynn or O'Bric got it. It's where we are it seems.

What would also be very county board is trying to tie Callaghan and Flynn together as joint hence the delay.. ah I really hope it's just rumour because it's underwhelming to say the least.

Cork County Board was a bit of a mirror image to ours for a few years there...but one can only look in envy at the transition from Kingston. It was a well know fact that this was to be Andy's last year , for reasons that have been debated here....so...why search only started since andy's official departure?
i have no faith in the people or process...and can only pray for "luck"

Yep agreed, as Blackspot says its all underwhelming (Callaghan, Flynn, O'Bric) and I'm setting myself up for just that scenario. I can also see a joint Flynn and Geraghty ticket and if you've two managers you've effectively no managers and things are set to fail from the outset.

Ah don't be so worried Brian. Sometimes a big name is just that - a big name. A lot of intangibles in intercounty management and what might work in one county might not work in another.

As I've said before I don't care who it is as long as we get some fundamental basics in place that were previously missing like kickouts, free taking and a greater variety of player type on the panel. We might not keep some of the better players like Keoghan or Menton on board without a big profile coming in but so be it, they deserve to enjoy something else, they've given enough of their time. Nothing wrong with quiet progress under the glare of media and pressure and maybe that's what we need.

Callaghan flynn geraghty biggy o bric who ever from this lot gets it it will still be better then paying a kerry man a fortune just to be there once a week and who will still probably have to have the above names on his ticket anyway, theres nothing underwhelming about having past all Ireland winning meath legends as a management team and if I was menton or keoghan I'd love to play for them, we have allot of young talent coming through at the minute who I'm sure have been watching videos of past great meath teams on YouTube who certainly wont find lads like Flynn geraghty and callaghan underwhelming, outside managers nearly always fail because they are there for money and have no passion for the county and wont work near as hard as our own would.

Personally I believe the modern day player would be more enthused by a manager with experience and a track record of success than an X playing great who won an Ireland or 2 30 years ago.

And to be honest I would suspect the majority of these young lads coming through would have no clue about the likes of Callaghan or Flynn as players. Probably only know Callaghan because of his work underage with Meath and Flynn because of his media profile and also because of the u20 debacle last year.

Now I'm not saying give it to FitzMaurice and shell whatever amount of money he is looking for. I'm not saying that is the answer but I don't believe the younger players on this Meath team or the ones who will come on to it over the next few years wouldn't be underwhelmed by some lads who were Meath players 25/30 years ago.

What about the tactical side of the modern game? Do you think just because you played as senior you'll make a great manager? The game has moved on from those days. Agree I'd love an internal Meath man, always have and will but has to have the experience to do it. As cian ward said intercounty management should never be a learning curve or a place to earn stripes.

Thats always a concern, why would an outside manager want this job? Not exactly a high profile position, forget the talk of sleeping giant, its a long term project and only reason a top class manager would take position would revolve around whats in it for them If new management can just improve the basics and that should be well within their ability, we should see a gradual improvement. Little to be gained by dissmissing all internal management before we see the make up of the group. Outside big name does not equal success, no more than internal name equals failure.

Well Royal legend,I think most of us would love it to be a Meath person to take over and bring us back towards the top end in the country. As you rightly say they would all have passion for Meath that no outside manager might have but Andy mactee would have as much passion as any of them have(Flynn ,Callaghan etc)and we just got rid of him.Passion alone will not be enough to bring us forward. We need a proper gameplan, structures put in place and be able to change and adapt to different teams (games)and young lads coming through buying into it.We need calm and cool heads on the sideline and while of course been passionate a line cant be crossed.I think that is why many feel a top outside manager would keep the likes of Keoghan,Menton ,McGill, o suvillan around for a bit longer and help the young lads through.Thats not to say the likes of (Flynn, callaghan etc)wouldn't be able to do this as you rightly say but none are proven at top level in management and if you were a gambling man most would go for tried and tested. If it comes down to one of the above maybe o bric might be the better option. He has won a minor all Ireland and for me more importantly knows the young lads inside out, knows what makes them tick and from what I've heard he is well liked by the young lads. The young lads are key to us moving forward and would a few of them have issues with Flynn and co after what happened with the under 20s?maybe not who knows.Iif the job is given inside the county time will have to be given and we as fans will have to be patient,of course we will want to see progress but it will take time for the young lads to mature. It will be interesting to see what happens and who gets it and hopefully whoever does brings us on.

Faith is in short supply at the moment and in the end luck will play a big role. Past evidence suggests we are more lightly to get it wrong, once I saw who was heading up selection panel all hope went out the window.

Couldn't agree more proud, it was passion that undid Andy it was some tactics in crucial areas of the modern game from kick outs to breaking down teams with a sweeper or fast transitions. If we had an accomplished internal choice we wouldn't be going near externals.
