Disappointing result but Galway made five changes and had 10/11 starters playing. That's a team made the League final and All Ireland semi final last year. BreffniGuide (Cavan) - Posts: 474 - 27/01/2019 17:02:55 2159970 Link 0 |

Frustrating stuff today, ill discipline cost us again as well as some shocking poor shooting. Work to do for Micky IamADragon (Cavan) - Posts: 310 - 27/01/2019 21:05:55 2160116 Link 0 |

It was a disappointing start to the league campaign. We are not able to get scores and until we get a reliable free taker we wont make progress. Our discipline let us down again. Raymond Galligan was our only stand out player. marita (None) - Posts: 469 - 27/01/2019 21:49:09 2160145 Link 0 |

Martin Reilly was good too.

Couldn't fault the effort today from the majority of the lads but we are extremely weak in vital areas. Teams run through the centre of our defense too easily. No clear candidate for CHB. Midfield is weak. No clear candidates here either. Gearoid probably needed here even though I'd rather see him in the half forwards. Our shooting is poor and we need a free taker. There's another 4 or 5 spots up for grabs up front on today's showing. We looked disjointed at times with communication and leadership not the best. When we had big lads in the square looking for the ball it wasn't coming in. When we were chasing the game we were landing ball in front of the square with not a forward in sight. Plenty to work on. A dramatic improvement needed next week to keep it respectable. On our discipline, I didn't think it was any worse than Galway's. The referee was very weak I thought and lost the run 2nd half. We can and will play better this campaign but these sort of performances unfortunately are in us. Hardtimes (Cavan) - Posts: 1056 - 27/01/2019 22:40:32 2160180 Link 0 |

Disappointing result today but we have to bounce back next week against a Kerry side who have a huge victory(confidence booster) over Tyrone, disapline was a problem today , cannot understand why the gunner keeps getting games when is a Liability every time he puts the jersey on , we have 6 good forwards but lack the stand out marquee forward that other counties have! Big performance and crowd support needed for the Kerry game paulie (Cavan) - Posts: 44 - 27/01/2019 23:58:40 2160203 Link 0 |

We have a reliable freetaker Jack Brady, he should take the frees Setantawatchl (Cavan) - Posts: 132 - 28/01/2019 00:37:38 2160208 Link 0 |

The Gunner black card was a ridiculous decisionby referee.

Gunner did absolutely nothing, he was tripped and got a black card for being tripped. Martin Reillys black was also a joke. A very poor ref indeed, same guy who rode us in the U21 semi against Dublin many years ago.

Hopefully, as the year progresses we will improve unlike in other recent years where the summer has been a disappointment. kildare blue (Cavan) - Posts: 578 - 28/01/2019 10:05:20 2160267 Link 0 |

Yes I did think Martin Reilly was good but the black card let him down

One or two positives yesterday and the effort couldn't be faulted from all. And I know it's early days yet and Mickey needs time to put his stamp on it but the selection of the defence and midfield positions was worrying in my opinion. Hope we're not going through the same up and down experience as last time we were in division 1 Virginia (Cavan) - Posts: 101 - 28/01/2019 12:58:09 2160370 Link 0 |

I'd agree Pat. Unfortunately solutions are not so simple. We probably peaked 2016 under Terry or at least plateaued and there are 3 gaping holes since his era. Simple fact of the matter is that if Alan Clarke, Mossy Corr and David Givney were fit, available and in their mid to late twenties there would be no footballers in the county remotely close to competing with them for their respective positions.

One of the problems with Cavan over the last 10 years and more is that you have a squad of 40 lads each year and bar 2/3 players you could pick any 12 or so players from the squad and there isn't a whole pile of difference in them. Agreed on Clarke, Givney and Corr. But the least Mickey could do is not repeat the mistakes of the previous manager. Ciaran Brady is one of the best footballers in the county. But he does not hold the centre and won't. Either does Moynagh. Might be able to get away with Brady at wing back, and if using Moynagh it should be as a wing forward or roaming corner forward, an attacking player who can work back and help out if necessary, but not as an orthodox defender.
