New Meath Manager

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

James Horan, Malachy O Rourke, Cian O Neill, Anthony Cunningham, Davy Burke everywhere they have gone, they have been successful. McDermont he has struggled in many jobs including the biggest one he has ever got the Clare senior job. Yes he did well at Wolfe Tone in Meath but struggled at Parnell in Dublin. He didn't do a good job with Gary Castle in Westmeath, Monaleen in Limerick, Parnells in Dublin and Clare senior job. That's 4 teams he did struggled at in last 12 years. Warning sign, they are warning signs. His CV is division 4 manager CV, Why has he not got inter county job in last ten years?

Ten years ago Longford interviewed Michael McDermott for the senior job. Longford picked Jack Sheedy instead. Yet Meath could appoint him in coming weeks. If so this year Cavan louth Kildare would have better manager. Kerry Dublin Armagh Mayo Derry Roscommon would all have better managers with better CVs this year. Div 3 teams like Offaly have better manager. Div 4 teams like Sligo with Tony McEntee and Cavan with Mickey Graham and Tipp with David Power would have better managers.

Let's look at his record at Clare. Its very worrying how poorly he did at Clare.
He managed Clare for 3 years 2010 2011 2012

2010 Clare were in div 4 of the league. He failed to get Clare promoted from div 4.
2010 He lost his first game in Munster championship to Waterford. Waterford knocked Clare out of championship in 2010. Offaly knocked them out of championship in first round of the qualifiers. This was time when Offaly struggled to beat anyone
2011 Clare were in div 4 in the league and he failed to get Clare from Div 4 promoted. Clare finished 6th in div 4 in 2011 Divison 4 league. Clare were one worst teams in the country in 2011 league and championship.
In Munster championship Clare lost their first round match again by 15 pts to Cork. Clare lost their first qualifier game to Down.
2012 Again at the third attempt he failed to get Clare out of Div 4 in 2012. He won his first championship match ever by beating limerick by one point. His Clare team was beaten by Cork by 25 pts in Munster final. One of the biggest defeats ever in Munster final. Again, lost first game qualifier v Kerry by 18 pts

Summary
Clare Championship record under Michael McDermott is 6 games, 5 losses, 1 victory. 0 wins in the Qualifiers.

All championship games Michael McDermott managed Clare 2010 - 2012 below

2010 Clare lost to Waterford lost to 4 pts
2010 Clare lost to Offay by 3 pts
2011 Clare lost to Cork by 25 pts
2011 Clare lost to Down by 10 pts
2012 Clare beat limerick by 1 pt
2012 Clare lost to Kerry by 19 pt

He failed to get Clare promoted from div 4. Won 1 championship in 3 years. He also wasn't successful with Parnell, Garycasltle and Monaleen in Limerick.
Where is evidence that a manger who couldn't get Clare promoted from div 4 ten years and has only won 1 championship ever as inter county manager ever that he is going to turn us into one of the best teams in the country. He has only managed at division 4 level.

Replying To Analyst:  "Where did you pull Stephen Bray from ,a former great player doesn't equate to great coach"
Where did he say he was going in as a coach? Most managements teams have 1 or 2 coaches EG Buckley McGurn then a couple of selectors. The likes of Bray would fit the bill perfectly as a selector IMO.

Replying To Furlong1949:  "If McDermott is manager it will be very underwhelming choice as manager. McDermott doesn't have CV manage Meath. He is very good club manager. But there is no evidence he is top class inter County manager. He has never managed successfully at the top level. The only inter County Job he was in running in last ten years was Longford job and Cavan job. Longford was nearly ten years ago. Longford picked Jack Sheedy instead. If he is such brillant manager why didn't kildare louth Offaly laois Longford Westmeath even leitrim or Sligo pick him as manager in last 5 or 6 years. Well the reason is his only inter County experience was managing div 3 team Clare for 3 years ten years ago and couldnt get them promoted. And we believe a manager who couldn't manage to get div 3 team to div 2 ten years ago, is going to get us from div 2 to div 1. The game has changed dramatically in last ten years at inter County level. Yes a good club manager but no sucesss at top level. If he is picked manager we will have manager with worst CV in div 1 div 2 next year and this year. Louth have manager who won 5 All Ireland titles, one of the greatest managers ever. We could have former Clare manager of 10 years ago who overall did very little with Clare. 3 years no promotion from div 3. Winning County titles in counties like Meath, are not standard bearer to be top class inter County manager top gaa manager. We all agree we adore Keegan Cup, we all agree Meath championship is poor, look at the sucess rate of Meath County champions in leinster at senior. The reason he is mentioned is because he won Keegan Cup this year. That's the reason. He wasn't mentioned as candiate in 2013 or 2017 or 2012 or 2010.

Yes he is good club manager. But at certain clubs. And he has managed many clubs unsuccessfully. He managed Parnells in Dublin. Did nothing with them. He managed Monaleen in Limerick did nothing with them. He managed Garycastle in 2013 failed to get them to county final in Westmeath this was first time this happened for Garycastle since 2007. He did managed Clare team to All Ireland club final. But that was 12 years ago. Failed to beat Antrim club in final. The clare club he managed to All Ireland club final is the strongest club in Clare by a mile. And interestingly when he became Clare senior manager He couldn't convince those club players he managed to join Clare senior team. I know this because in 2013 when Longford were looking at him as manager, I know some Longford fans and they weren't happy he was being appointed as manager. Because his CV is patchy. Even though he had just being Clares manager in 2012. Longford went for Jack Sheedy. Longford didn't pick him in 2013. Ten years later no management at inter County or top level in that ten years and yet because he won a Cavan county title and Meath county title he could be next Meath manager. ???????

In 2013 when he was available no one mentioned him as Meath manager same in 2009 or 2017. He hasn't managed inter County team in ten years is that not a warning sign. Only Longford considered him as manager is that not a warning sign. ( Yes Cavan but there was no way Cavan would pick him over Mickey Graham. Mickey Graham would be excellent option for Meath manager but sadly he is not available). He only managed a div 3 team is that not a warning sign. Biggest warning sign is if u compare his cv to All div 1 and div 2 managers this year and last year. There will be odd one out and that is this manager.

Jack O Connor managed teams to 7 All Ireland title before kerry job. Mickey Harte managed teams to 5 All Ireland title before louth. Dessie Farrell managed Dublin teams to minor and U21 All Ireland titles before Dubs job. Loohan and Dooher managed Tyrone to U21 All Ireland title before senior job. James Horan managed Mayo seniors to 2 All Ireland senior finals and 4 Connacht senior title's before Mayo job. Kieran McGeeney managed kildare seniors for 7 years at times in div1 and reaching many quater finals before Armsgh job. Banty managed Monaghan seniors from div 4 to div 1, Meath seniors to first v Dublin leinster final in 11 years, managed Monaghan minors to Ulster titles and Monaghan ladies seniors before took Monaghan job. Glen Ryan managed kildare U21 to All Ireland final and Longford seniors before kildare job. Declan Bonner managed Donegal seniors and Donegal minors to All Ireland final before senior job. James McCartan managed Down seniors to All Ireland senior final and Down u21 before took Down senior job. Rory Gallagher was assistant manager to McGuinness when Donegal won Sam in 2012 and managed Fermanagh senior nearly to div 1 before Derry job. John Maughnan managed Mayo to 3 All Ireland senior finals and Clare to their only Munster title in last 90 years before Offaly job and also managed Roscommon and Fermanagh. Our possible new manager managed Clare in div 3 ten years and couldn't get them promoted before he takes Meath job. Who is odd one out.
Would he get kildare job. I don't think so.

Take another manager who could be available soon Anthony Cunningham. Look at his CV to Cunningham leaves Roscommon in next week r 2 his cv is he managed
Galway U21 hurlers to 2 U21 All Ireland titles
Galway senior hurlers to their first ever leinster titles
Galway hurlers senior to 2 All Ireland finals
Garycastle to leinster senior club title and All Ireland club final
St Brigids to Roscommon senior title
Roscommon seniors to Connacht title and Div 2 league title.
He is only manager ever to win provincial titles in hurling and football with two different team in two different provinces ever. He was manager who knocked Brian Cody's kilkenny greatest all team ever from their perch in leinster.
That's more like a div 1 CV.

Malachy O Rourke is outstanding choice so would James Horan. But Stephen Rochford and Eamon Fitzmaurice are excellent choices. But Fitzmaurice has stated he will never manage a county other than kerry. So for county board having him as number 1 when he has stated this makes no sense. This is common knowledge making Fitzmaurice first choice when he has stated he will never manage any county team but kerry makes no sense. Surely Malachy O Rourke first choice is common sense of the highest order. Fitzmaurice is principal of biggest secondary school in kerry also, hes not going to have time to manage Meath even if he wanted 2. He is not going to manage Meath. O Rourke is the number one choice has to be and is available. Horan sud be number 2. Than Rochford 3.

If they are not interested and we want to go for managers who are from neighbouring counties there are two very good candidates on out doorstep, who have better CVs than McDermott. McDermott seems to me old school manager, traditional manager. Andy was acussed as being to tradition and yet we are potentially replacing him with even more traditional manager. Andy is better manager than McDermott he has better CV.

So two candidates on our borders we should be looking at and one of them maybe both would take job our first Davy Burke. Davy Burke lives less than 10 minutes away from Meath border. He is the best young manager in the country. He is the nost wanted manager in Leinster. He turned down 2 leinster senior manager jobs last year. He was part of Dublin ladies senior management team. Managed teams to county titles in kildare. He managed kildare to their only All Ireland title at any grade in last 50 years in 2018 with U20s. He is only kildare man ever to manage kildare team to All Ireland title and managed kildare to only their 2nd All Ireland title at any grade in 94 years. He managed Wicklow seniors to div 4 titles and div 3. He is modern young gaa manager. He was going to be kildare next manager only Kildare appointed a management team of all greatest kildare footballers ever.

The next option is Cian O Neill. One of the best coach's in the country in last 15 years, if not the best coach. In last 15 years he has coached Kerry Cork Mayo kildare Galway limerick senior footballers Tipp senior hurlers and managed kildare seniors.

He coached Limerick senior footballer to nearly winning Munster senior title in 2000s
He coached Tippearay senior hurlers to 3 All Ireland final 2009 2010 2011. He managed Tippearay hurlers to All Ireland senior hurling title in 2010.
He coached kerry to their last Senior All Ireland title in 2014. He is the only coach to manage kerry to All Ireland title who is not from Kerry.
He coached Mayo to Connacht senior title's under James Horan
He managed kildare snrs footballers from div 3 to div 1. He managed kildare snrs to their first leinster final in 8 years and to super 8s. He managed kildare to their only victory over top team in championship in last 21 years v Mayo in 2018.
He is currently coach to Galway seniors. He has coached Galway seniors to Connacht title and All Ireland semi final maybe even All Ireland title in coming weeks.

Galway were struggling under Joyce in first two years. O Neill comes in year 3 and Galway improve massively. People are putting Galways improvement down to O Neill. Galway are potential All Ireland winners in coming week. And there improvement is seen as down to O Neill.
ONeill is head of Sport science in Cork IT He has top gaa coach for last 15 years. Everywhere he goes he is successful and he has inter County management experience with kildare in div 1 recently. He is not a manager at moment. If Meath County board offer him job you would have to say he could definitely take it seen he has involved with country teams from Mayo to kildare Galway to Tippearay for 15 years. Anyone who work with him says he phenomenonal coach. We need a manager who is modern day tactically aware coach at top level. O Neill is the best in business. And he is not managing team currently. Why would we pick a manager who only top level experience is ten years ago at div 3 while we could get best young manager in the country or possibly best coach in the country who has also managed at top level at inter County recently.

Malachy O Rourke is outstanding choice than Horan Rochford. No disrespect to McDermott, Meath job is the biggest job in Meath life. We want to become One of best teams in the country something we haven't done in 20 years. Barry, Coyle, O Brien, Banty, O Dowd, McEntee have all failed to do so. Barry Coyle and McEntee had better CV than McDermott especially Andy. We need a better manager than Andy. Malachy O Rourke is better manager than Andy so is Stephen Rochford, James Horan also would be a brillant choice. Cian O Neill is better coach manager than Andy. Everywhere James Horan has gone he has being successful even at top level inter County. Everywhere Malachy O Rourke has gone he has been successful. Everywhere Davy Burke has gone he has being successful. Everywhere Cian O Neill goes he has being successful. Not Everywhere Michael mcdermont goes is he successful. He wasn't successful at inter County. Yes he has being successful with some clubs. But he has being unsuccessful with other clubs like Parnells in Dublin, Monaleen in Limerick and Garycastle in Westmeath."
Excellent post as always. Does the fact that fitzmorris has agreed to be interviewed change his position? Or as my late farther would say are we throwing stones at our coat ?? No doubt he is the outstanding candidate. But is that enough ? What about the former Offaly and ballinabrackey those coach ? Pity no one asked him.

Anyone know who else has worked with McDermott?"
Yes titles in poor championships eg Clare Limerick and other poor championship eg Meath and Cavan. When he managed top club championship in country with big club he struggled with Parnells in Dublin. He took over top Westmeath club Garycastle they went backwards. And biggest job he ever got he did at Clare was poor to say the least.

He is Former Clare manager. CLARE A DIVISION 4 TEAM at time. No one ever goes into detail what happened at Clare. Its not pretty reading.

He managed div 4 Clare for 3 years and failed each year to get them promoted from div 4. In his second year they went backwards and were near bottom of div 4. Knocked out of championship by Waterford in his first year manager. Hammered by Cork by 25 pts and kerry by 19th points by Cork by 15 pts again, hammerings humilations to big 2 in Munster. Struggled to beat Worst teams in country. Struggled to win just 1 championship. Didn't win one qualifier game. He has never won 2 games in championship ever, just 1.

He managed Clare in 7 championship games losing 6 winning 1
2010 Clare lost to Waterford by 4 pts
2010 Clare lost to Offaly by 3 pts
2011 Clare lost to Cork by 15pts
2011 Clare lost to Down by 10 pts
2012 Clare beat Limerick by 1 pt
2012 Clare lost to Cork by 25 pts
2012 Clare lost to kerry by 19 pts

Longford looked how he couldnt get Ckare promoted from div 4 in 3 years and how bad is championship record was with Clare and wouldn't appoint him in 2013. Went for Jack Sheedy. He hasn't managed an inter County team in ten years even though he has went for interviews for job.

McDermott doesn't have CV to manage any team in div 1 or div 2. Regards div 4 its noticeable no div 4 county has given him a job since he left Clare in div 4. I am shocked dismayed that he could be next Meath manager. The county board to appoint a manager who cannot get div 4 team out of div 4 three years in a row is mind-boggling. That's his only experience at top level of gaa. Hopefully someone in county board can wake up and smell coffee.

In conparsion Eamon Fitzmaurice would be excellent appointment. Hopefully this is what the county board is thinking not a division 4 manager. Fitzmaurice Won All Ireland senior title with kerry in 2014 and 6 Munster senior titles with kerry. Only Mick Dwyer has won more Munster senior titles as kerry manager. He managed kerry to div 1 national league title in 2017. He also managed kerry school to 2 All Ireland school titles and 6 Munster schools titles and also managed kerry U21s. He also has won lots of titles managing schools and underage teams in kerry. Seen only kerry managers and Meath manager have beaten Dubs in leinster ever ( Sean Boylan Eamon O Brien Meath Mick Dwyer Paudi O Se kerry and of course Longfords Eugene McGee, are only managers to beat Dublin in leinster) if Meath were appoint the last All Ireland winning kerry manager who has close links to Donie Buckley that would be excellent appointment. Thats the sort of CV Meath County board should be looking at.

Davy Burke from Kildare should be the candidate that the Meath county board are chasing down as the best and most realistic option for the job. He is one of the best young coaches in the country and has had success everywhere he has gone. Malachy O'Rourke and Eamon Fitzmaurice are not realistic candidates and never were. Bernard Flynn would be a massive gamble and a mistake, as he has no CV what so ever to warrant getting the job, apart from being a former Meath player. Michael McDermott would be a extremely underwhelming and disappointing appointment. Robbie Brennan should also be a candidate on his own for the job. I don't understand why he wouldn't be.

Thanks Royaldunne yes I saw that this morning he is going to be interviewed. If he still believed in not managing team outside kerry you would think he would turn down interview. Maybe Seen Meath are not in Munster and Meath play kerry in championship so irregular eg 1970 1986 2001 2009 2019 basically every ten years, that could soften his policy of not managing any team not kerry. Best outside Managers have been kerry managers eg Micko Dwyer kildare laois , Paudi O Se Westmeath, Micky Ned Sullivan and liam kerins at Limerick, and John Evans at Tipp and Mayo managers eg John O Mahony Galway John O Mahony Clare Offaly, Peter Forde Sligo, Kevin McStay Roscommon. It would be good idea to go for last kerry All Ireland winning manager. Kerry have the best record of outside managers in country next being Mayo than Ulster managers. Outside manager meaning kerry managers going to other counties. Surprisingly Dubs don't produce good outside manager. If you don't consider Tommy lyons a Dublin manager ( he was born and grew up in Mayo) with his time as Offaly. I cannot think of any successful Dublin manager outside the county. Tommy Carr in Roscommon Paul Bealin in Wexford Johnny Magee in Wicklow Val Andrews in Cavan Brian McDonald in Mayo ( first gaa player strike v Manager) Brian Mullins in Derry. None of them did amazing jobs. I cannot think of one outside successful Dublin manager, a Dublin manager manging county successful outside Dublin. In comparsion kerry have great record of outside manager going to other counties. And Kerry managers have excellent record in leinster. Fitzmaurice would be excellent choice. I hope he is genuinely interested. If he is, the county board sud offer him job straightaway.

Horan, Fitzmaurice, Cunningham, McGuinness, Rochford - not a hope would they take on the Meath job. The job isn't the most attractive anymore, let's be realistic. Farrell, Reilly, Flynn, O'Bric - they do not have the sufficient experience. McDermott - no thanks. Great success at club level but that's it. I heard Paul Curran is in for it. Could he bring a decent background team - possibly Clarke/Sherlock? What about Jason Ryan - what is he at these days? Pat Gilroy would be an excellent manager and would being some good coaches.

Lads, I'm not going to get into the ins and outs here but i think Fitzmaurice is pie in the sky. This is another short term fix and hope it boosts things. Its not a long term solution to anything. This will be over in 1-2 years and we're back to square 1 and nothing will have been resolved, fixed or a long term vision put in place.

Can we honestly say that Eamonn Fitzmaurice is going to drive 2,000 km a week to come up and train and manage a Meath team on top of being a principle of a large secondary school. Is he also going to give up his gig with The Sunday Game where i'm sure he's getting a nice fee each week for a role he's not getting paid for (let's be honest we know he's not taking the meath job without getting something in return) He'll need 3 sessions a week at least to get his idea's and thoughts across to the panel, watch games, build relationships etc. Personally and this is just my opinion this won't work. I applaud the thinking behind it but is this in the long term interest of Meath football or will it just deplete coffers because you're going to have to give this guy a new car every season plus travelling expenses to get him to training. And we don't have a Noel Keating with his helicopter who's going to ferry him up and down the country a couple of times a week. This is a short term solution which is set up to fail form the outset

Look at Jack o'Connor, he managed two season's with Kildare. He couldn't give any more and resigned. Now maybe he knew he was getting the Kerry job back so it was an easy decision to make, but he is also a school principle and wasn't travelling and additional 150 - 200km to and from Navan each time. And he has son's living in the county who I'm sure he probably slept over with once a week. Eamonn Fitzmaurice wouldn't have that with Meath.

And here's the conundrum, Jack O'Connor will likely stay for 2-3 years with Kerry and they'll move on. Who will be the bookies favourite for the role at that time. One Eamonn Fitzmaurice will be on a very short list of candidates and then travelling 600km at a time suddenly isn't as appealing.

Look at all the ex Kerry managers that Furlong mentions, how many of them lasted more than a couple of years in each role. Micko was probably the longest in Kildare but the man was retired at that stage and not having a young family and a full time employment. He also had a son living in Kildare where I'm sure he slept a few nights.

And here's the other side of these Kerry managers coming in, how do the teams do in the aftermath of them leaving? Not exactly a roaring success. And if you look at them they all take a huge drop off after the former Kerry manager leaves. is that honestly what we want in Meath?

Lads honestly for every Micko there's a Thomas o'Flartha who fails, for every John Evans or Paidi O'Se there's a Mike Quirke. Yes Micko won a couple of Leinster's and Paidi won one but other than that what have all these ex Kerry managers won. And what has been their legacy? Has one of them won an All Ireland?

I get the excitement, I genuinely do but I'm realistic enough to see where this road leads and its not to the long term benefit of Meath football.

Honestly I would have huge reservations about Eamonn Fitzmaurice getting the Meath job for the reasons outlined above and think people need to consider these things once the initial excitement subsides. Where will Meath football be after his time if he is appointed. History shows not a very good place.

It seems Malachy O'Rourke isn't interested now too. And if so I'd be disappointed but realistic enough to see he's not going to commit to 400km round trips several times a week. And all of the above points ring true re what i say about the Kerry managers. What i will say for o'Rourke is wherever he's gone success has followed in club and county football.

Replying To BigJoe14:  "Davy Burke from Kildare should be the candidate that the Meath county board are chasing down as the best and most realistic option for the job. I don't understand why he wouldn't be."
Fair play Joe, i think you and I are on the same page in our thinking. Everything you say in this post i 100% agree with.

Of the names being touted this is the order of preference they should go in:

1. Eamon Fitzmaurice
2. Davy Burke
3. Robbie Brennan
4. Bernard Flynn & Robbie Brennan
5. Michael McDermott

There is one clear outstanding candidate on this list if he is interested in taking the job. Their is potential in Meath and we really need to start making dents on taking down Dublin in Leinster. But we first need to get competitive with them.

Brian what's the alternative? There's nothing within the county at this moment in time that is a better option in my view.

Outside the county if we want one of the better managers around it's going to be a 3 year term with no certainty over a second term. Davy Burke is popular but didn't last long at wicklow himself.

O Rourke would have a monster commute and is also a teacher so not long term.

More generally management positions in the current day, var a few exceptions where local management is available is a 2-4 year stint and a change at that point? The days of a boylan style reign are gone.

I do find it amazing that meath would try get a top tier manager and you are still unhappy. As with many of your posts it's negative, what is the alternative rather than pick holes

Replying To Tinchy1:  "Horan, Fitzmaurice, Cunningham, McGuinness, Rochford - not a hope would they take on the Meath job. Pat Gilroy would be an excellent manager and would being some good coaches."
Agree with all you say in the first part.

If Paul Curran is in for it he's a great candidate, and should be under serious consideration. As you say could he organise a strong backroom team, Mick Deegan might be a name which would be on the ticket with him.

Jason Ryan is a school principle in Dungarvan. I lived in Waterford and have mutual friends with him. I've spoken to him on many occasions and after the Kildare job he didn't want to travel much more. He helps out with Wexford youths in soccer but i think his days as an intercounty manager are over. Again Dungarvan to Navan is a 250km trip so 1,500 km a week isn't manageable. He has a great mind for the game but I don't think we'll see him back in intercounty management, unless his thought's have changed since i last spoke to him.

Pat Gilroy i don't think would take it. He's a very successful businessman and had hard time doing the Dublin job as well as his full time job. He'd be a great guy to come in and help get structures etc in place. Maybe as a pseudo director of operations, but would he have the time.

Is Eamonn Fitz a realistic option, why would he choose to clock up the milage required to put in the massive effort it will take to get Meath competitive and consistant once again ? Has he seen something that makes him think he can be a success or will he see it as a handy gig with nothing to loose, a bit like JOC with Kildare. Expenses alone will be very high, add in the extras and CB will be spending big. Understand we have to put hand in pocket to get right management team. Just cannot see it working, mainly down to distance, long journey especially when weather is not so good. New management will need to spend quality time with panel, can he commit to this? Handing day to day running of training to assistant has to be a non runner.

Absolutely no chance Fitzmaurice would even consider the Meath role. Let's stop fooling ourselves please
