Replying To seadog54: "Is Eamonn Fitz a realistic option, why would he choose to clock up the milage required to put in the massive effort it will take to get Meath competitive and consistant once again ? Has he seen something that makes him think he can be a success or will he see it as a handy gig with nothing to loose, a bit like JOC with Kildare. Expenses alone will be very high, add in the extras and CB will be spending big. Understand we have to put hand in pocket to get right management team. Just cannot see it working, mainly down to distance, long journey especially when weather is not so good. New management will need to spend quality time with panel, can he commit to this? Handing day to day running of training to assistant has to be a non runner." Who would you suggest? It's no wonder Meath are a laughing stock outside the county I'll be honest. Wouldn't be another county in Ireland in our position who would suggest Eamonn fitz isn't the right option. You do have to laugh. So Eamonn isn't the answer (and is short term and would leave Meath in a worse state) but these are better options, in no particular order
- Paul Curran with no senior intercounty experience just clubs and u21s
- Davy Burke - only senior experience 2 years at wicklow where achievement was getting promoted from D4 and almost relegated the following year and left after 2 years.
- Michael McDermott club manager who couldn't get out of D4
- Robbie Brennan - club manager who was involved with an u20s side who struggled and looked disorganised despite a talented panel.
A heavy dose of reality is needed, Eamonn has agreed to be interviewed, may say no but to suggest appointing him, if he is interested is not in the interest of Meath football is an absolute farce.

Brian what's the alternative? There's nothing within the county at this moment in time that is a better option in my view.
Outside the county if we want one of the better managers around it's going to be a 3 year term with no certainty over a second term. Davy Burke is popular but didn't last long at wicklow himself.
O Rourke would have a monster commute and is also a teacher so not long term.
More generally management positions in the current day, var a few exceptions where local management is available is a 2-4 year stint and a change at that point? The days of a boylan style reign are gone.
I do find it amazing that meath would try get a top tier manager and you are still unhappy. As with many of your posts it's negative, what is the alternative rather than pick holes
=================================================================================================
Joe, I've said for months and I agree with you that there's no alternative within the county. However there's plenty of candidates in our nearest neighbor who've been involved in successful all ireland winning teams who could be approached about their availability.I've mentioned their names ad nauseum. Tom Gray, Paul Clarke, Paul Curran, Declan D'Arcy, Mick Deegan, Jason Sherlock heck if we're knocking on Fitzmaurice's door why aren't we knocking on Jim Gavin's door.
I agree with your view of getting in top tier managers and their length of service, I commend the county board for looking at Fitzmaurice (as i stated in the post you replied too), but look at the logistics of it. Seadog i see has posted something similar to me, is s/he too being negative. We can all have a voice and see the logic and reality of things, without it being negative. I'm sure there's plenty of things you'd disagree with and I wouldn't see you disagreeing as being negative more having some concerns and trying to live on the real world. That's what I'm doing with this news. Call it negative if you like but i'm being realistic.

Joe people are allowed have opinions and base them on logic and reality. Lets not forget Eamonn Fitzmaurice had no intercounty experience before he got the Kerry job not sure if he even had Club management experience, before you start running down Paul Curran, who has won county titles in Dublin, the hardest county to win a club championship in or Robbie Brennan who did likewise and wasn't the manager of the U20 team you're downplaying who had multiple players playing 1 and 2 years up in the age grade.
Here's a question for you, how much do you think it's going to cost the Meath County Board to get Fitzmaurice on board? He's not going to drive 2,000km a week for the good of his health or the love of Meath football. To get him to do that he's going to have to be very very heavily incentivised to do it (not saying other candidates won't either)
You're well able to run down other peoples idea's and be negative about their thoughts, maybe have a little bit of humility and realise this is a discussion forum where people are entitled to an opinion.
I respect your opinions on Eamonn Fitzmaurice and agree if he wants to come on board he'd be a very good appointment but I'll temper my expectations on it becoming a reality for the reasons i've outlined and consider the financial resources that's going to soak up over a 2-4 year period if it happens.

Sorry Brian but I just don't believe it is in the interests of Meath football to be consistently negative. It makes no sense. Bear in mind Andy McEntee who rightly or wrongly has been Gotten stick from myself included for his tactics or lack there of, managed to conquer the Dublin SFC with a side not fancied in Dublin so I don't fully think you can appoint anyone from the Dublin club scene and expect success.
All those you mentioned were below Dessie on the Dublin succession plan and you can see the step down they have taken.
It's going to cost a significant amount to get any top manager I completely agree but is the option to take a lesser option to save money? I also gather our income from sponsorship may very well increase to cover a lot of the expenses also (regardless of Eamonn or otherwise).
To be clear I have absolutely no issue with you or anyone saying it's a long long shot to get him, I do have an issue with the notion of *if he is interested that he wouldn't be the right option; I fully agree that all the stars need to align for it to happen but if they were, and there is some hope that he might, it wouldn't be positive.

Only time will tell, never said Eamonn Fitz was not the right option, just a very expensive risk when everything is taken into account. Can you see him travelling the length of the country at least three times a week? Also need to take into account his job and the pressures that come with it, especially in the months prior to exams which ties in with intercounty season. Fully agree a heavy dose of reality is badly needed.

I'd be 95% sure he won't take it (from 99.9% a few days ago) but if he signs up I think he will be invested it as he has a reputation he won't want to ruin by outsourcing it all to an assistant.

Joe, again you make fair points.
I'd argue Gavin's best trick might've been getting out before the bandwagon broke on Dublin and that Dessie was always destined to fail as the team aged and broke up and Gavin didn't have to bring through the new younger lads to replace the Cluxtons,McCaffrey's, McAuleys etc, which Dessie has had to do. Now that's beside the point so lets move on ;) Everyone knew from years out Dessie would be getting the job and it wasn't about continuity as to why the lads didn't get it.
Look as you say Fitz is a long shot, its not impossible, and maybe the stars will align. If they do, like every manager they'll have my full support and backing. As with any manager my opinions will be based on whats on the pitch and hopefully that will improve from where we're at now.
Do you mind if i ask a couple of questions on points you made?
Think you said Malachy has said no outright (which he's entitled too)? Is that something you've heard
On the sponsorship stuff, is it a case of if Eamonn comes on Board a certain sponsor is lined up? Or is that for anyone who's coming on board,
I don't think you're a BS merchant like some on here so i know if you're saying these things I know you've some genuine knowledge of the situation. if you can't say obviously don't ;)

Replying To brian: "Lads, I'm not going to get into the ins and outs here but i think Fitzmaurice is pie in the sky. This is another short term fix and hope it boosts things. Its not a long term solution to anything. This will be over in 1-2 years and we're back to square 1 and nothing will have been resolved, fixed or a long term vision put in place.
Can we honestly say that Eamonn Fitzmaurice is going to drive 2,000 km a week to come up and train and manage a Meath team on top of being a principle of a large secondary school. Is he also going to give up his gig with The Sunday Game where i'm sure he's getting a nice fee each week for a role he's not getting paid for (let's be honest we know he's not taking the meath job without getting something in return) He'll need 3 sessions a week at least to get his idea's and thoughts across to the panel, watch games, build relationships etc. Personally and this is just my opinion this won't work. I applaud the thinking behind it but is this in the long term interest of Meath football or will it just deplete coffers because you're going to have to give this guy a new car every season plus travelling expenses to get him to training. And we don't have a Noel Keating with his helicopter who's going to ferry him up and down the country a couple of times a week. This is a short term solution which is set up to fail form the outset
Look at Jack o'Connor, he managed two season's with Kildare. He couldn't give any more and resigned. Now maybe he knew he was getting the Kerry job back so it was an easy decision to make, but he is also a school principle and wasn't travelling and additional 150 - 200km to and from Navan each time. And he has son's living in the county who I'm sure he probably slept over with once a week. Eamonn Fitzmaurice wouldn't have that with Meath.
And here's the conundrum, Jack O'Connor will likely stay for 2-3 years with Kerry and they'll move on. Who will be the bookies favourite for the role at that time. One Eamonn Fitzmaurice will be on a very short list of candidates and then travelling 600km at a time suddenly isn't as appealing.
Look at all the ex Kerry managers that Furlong mentions, how many of them lasted more than a couple of years in each role. Micko was probably the longest in Kildare but the man was retired at that stage and not having a young family and a full time employment. He also had a son living in Kildare where I'm sure he slept a few nights.
And here's the other side of these Kerry managers coming in, how do the teams do in the aftermath of them leaving? Not exactly a roaring success. And if you look at them they all take a huge drop off after the former Kerry manager leaves. is that honestly what we want in Meath?
Lads honestly for every Micko there's a Thomas o'Flartha who fails, for every John Evans or Paidi O'Se there's a Mike Quirke. Yes Micko won a couple of Leinster's and Paidi won one but other than that what have all these ex Kerry managers won. And what has been their legacy? Has one of them won an All Ireland?
I get the excitement, I genuinely do but I'm realistic enough to see where this road leads and its not to the long term benefit of Meath football.
Honestly I would have huge reservations about Eamonn Fitzmaurice getting the Meath job for the reasons outlined above and think people need to consider these things once the initial excitement subsides. Where will Meath football be after his time if he is appointed. History shows not a very good place.
It seems Malachy O'Rourke isn't interested now too. And if so I'd be disappointed but realistic enough to see he's not going to commit to 400km round trips several times a week. And all of the above points ring true re what i say about the Kerry managers. What i will say for o'Rourke is wherever he's gone success has followed in club and county football." Well Brian, I take your point that we need to be looking long term,as a quick fix could well leave us worse off than we are.I also cant see Eamonn fitzmaurice driving from Kerry 2 or 3 times a week and back again. As you say it would cost alot to get him on board as well and do we have the money (even though we are not redeveloping Navan)and would it be better off being spent on underage structure? Is this just all smoke from the county board just to say well we tried to get top men in?If he has agreed to be interviewed though he must have some interest so that's good if that's the case.On the flip side(look at it another way) getting him in (Eammon fitzmaurice) would be a massive boost to the county. You would imagine the majority of players in the county would be chopping at the bit to play for him.5 all irelands, young enough (45) knows the modern game well and a principal so might know how to deal with younger players better you would think. It would certainly draw more fans back as well.If for arguments sake he got us to division 1 and kept us there or and won a Leinster imagine the feel good factor we would have, more people going to games, more kids wanting to play for Meath Etc Etc.The main thing though would be to have someone in the county in with him(a selector)who then would become a successor so if he does leaves you have somone who knows the in and outs and could take over and keep things moving in the right direction. If you could do that then maybe its looking more long term. You nevercknow what way things work out of course but we are at the minute a mid to top division 2 side at best probably more mid.We haven't won anything since 2010 and bar the division 2 final v Donegal we haven't really looked like winning anything. If he came in I think we would go up a few notches and we might get back to division 1 and maybe even a leinster(why not)so would it be worth it for a couple of years.I think it might be and if he goes after 2/3 years you would imagine we would be in a better place and more attractive to play for and manage. We could do all of above with Flynn, mac dermot,Brennan, Etc no doubt so it should be interesting.I dont see him taking the job but if he did I think it might be worth the gamble. The feel good factor would be there from the start as I think most Meath people would take him as he is a proven winner.I would of course love a Meath man to takes us all the way to the top but at the minute doesn't seem to be many ready for it yet no doubt in a couple of years we will have a few.

No question E Fitz is a very impressive man and you can see from his tv analysis that he has savage insight and understanding of modern tactics.
But he'd be too expensive in terms of travel expenses and he's no connection to the county at all (unlike say many of the possible Dublin men we could consider and who have very interesting experience). Unless he was stone mad to do it and wanted to move up etc I can't see it.

Replying To brian: "Agree with all you say in the first part.
If Paul Curran is in for it he's a great candidate, and should be under serious consideration. As you say could he organise a strong backroom team, Mick Deegan might be a name which would be on the ticket with him.
Jason Ryan is a school principle in Dungarvan. I lived in Waterford and have mutual friends with him. I've spoken to him on many occasions and after the Kildare job he didn't want to travel much more. He helps out with Wexford youths in soccer but i think his days as an intercounty manager are over. Again Dungarvan to Navan is a 250km trip so 1,500 km a week isn't manageable. He has a great mind for the game but I don't think we'll see him back in intercounty management, unless his thought's have changed since i last spoke to him.
Pat Gilroy i don't think would take it. He's a very successful businessman and had hard time doing the Dublin job as well as his full time job. He'd be a great guy to come in and help get structures etc in place. Maybe as a pseudo director of operations, but would he have the time." Sorry all but did i miss something, where has Paul Curran had success that the likes of Mc Dermott hasn't ??, majority of posts pointing out potential candidates lack of experience but where is Currans to justify being considered

But unfortunately the one with the best cv is the one who has just gone. After that we are scraping for unproven and inexperienced managers. That will bring what exactly? Some say quick fix ? I don't care. We need the best available. The committee in fairness from what I heard approached 4 outside managers. 1 Eamonn fitzmorris, 2 Malachy orurke, 3 Jim Mc Guinness, 4 Jim gavin. Gavin said absolutely no straight away as did mc Guinness , orurke came back in a couple of days and said he would not be going for interview as the commute was too much. Fitzmorris said tell me some details and conversations have continued, he is willing to be interviewed and is actually bringing a plan with him to show the panel. The others been interviewed (that I know of ) are Flynn , geraghty , McDermott , Brennan and I believe Farrell (although not certain of that) I'm not sure about davey burke. I've been told yea and I've been told no. But in all honesty we can't really ask for more from the committee or the cb at this moment and I have been extremely critical (with just cause) of Meath cb over the years. But at least they doing this right. Who will we get is anyones guess. Remember no one knew mod had even gone for interview before he was announced.

Thanks for the comment Joeshow.
t's seems at the moment it's eitheir All Ireland winning manager with huge levels of success and experience at top level of gaa and every level of gaa versus manager who won a couple county titles in a few poor club championships and div 4 manager who couldn't get div 4 team out of division 4. If Fitzmaurice doesn't want the job McDermott is being lined up and it look like that at the moment. That could change but thats all the noises coming out at the moment. An All Ireland winning manager one of the top inter county managers of his generation or div 4 inter county manager. Who is the better manager?. That's how must teams look at the situation. If you asked every county in leinster or Munster or Connacht or Ulster who do you want aa Eamon Fitzmaurice or Michael McDermont, I think there would be one winner by a landslide. Its not even a debate. It factual. Eamon Fitzmaurice is at different level div 1 All Ireland winning level to a div 4 level of the other choice. McDermott has all the hallmarks of Banty marked 2 but worse. He repeats what happens at Clare all hell will break loose in Meath. It will be 2 years of turmoil conflict div 3 maybe div 4 football Tailtean Cup forget about leinster finals or q finals. And best generation of young Meath football in 20 years will be coming into shitshow of gigantic proportions.
Regards paying Fitzmaurice will we not also have to pay McDermott also. All outside manager are expensive. Yes there is issue with travel, but Micko and Paudi both overcame that and were huge incredible success stories with kildare laois and Westmeath. Regards Kerry managers being suceesful. Yes Michael Quirke wasn't but there is key difference. Michael Quirke is not All Ireland kerry winning manager. Mick Dwyer was All Ireland winning Kerry manager. Michael Quirke was not All Ireland winning keery manager. Paudi O Se was All Ireland Kerry winning manager. And so is Eamon Fitzmaurice an All Ireland winning Kerry manager.
Regards Fitzmaurice experience he has been managing successfully for 20 years. He won Hogans Cup with his school, and bucket load of titles at every level in kerry football and Munster and All Ireland level . He managed kerry U21 and than kerry seniors. And was selector under Jack O Connor with kerry senior. He is Former All Ireland winning schools and senior kerry manager, former kerry U21 manager and former All Ireland winning kerry senior selector. Here is CV beneath. Its very long.
Eamon Fitzmaurice CV Managed kerry to 1 All Ireland senior title in 2014 Managed kerry to 6 Munster senior titles in 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 Managed kerry to 1 National league div 1 title in 2017 Managed kerry U21 to Munster U21 title Hw was selector with Kerry seniors in 2009 under Jack O Connor when Kerry won All Ireland senior title and National league div 1 title. As kerry selector won Munster senior title with kerry in 2010 Managed his school to 2 Hogan Cup All-Ireland school titles in 2014 2015 Managed his school to 6 Munster A School Titles Managed his school to All Ireland U16 title ( Paul McGirr Cup) Managed kerry seniors to 2 McGrath Cup in 2013 2017 Managed his club to 2 East Kerry junior championship 2012 2018 Managed his club to 2 Junior Club Championships 2008 2009 Managed his school to 3 U15 kerry County titles in 2009 2010 2011 Managed his school to U15 Munster School Titles 2011 2012 Managed his school to kerry school U17 title in 2011 Managed his School to 2 U17 Munster School A titles in 2012 2018
In total Eamon Fitzmaurice has managed at different levels successfully many many different gaa teams in last 15 years. As manager in 15 years he has won 36 titles/ competitions in 15 years as GAA manager at kerry junior club championship, Munster and kerry Schools U15 and Munster and kerry School U17 and kerry Munster and All Ireland schools U18 and Inter County U21 and Inter County senior as selector and manager. As a player he won 3 All Ireland senior, 6 Munster senior titles, 2 national league titles, Minor All Ireland titles, U21 All Ireland titles, Junior club All Ireland title, Cork and kerry County titles, Munster senior club title. And 2 kerry hurling club championships. As a player selector and manager since he made his debut for kerry minors in 1994, 28 years ago Eamon Fitzmaurice has won 65 titles as player and manager in 28 years since he made his debut. Eamon Fitzmaurice is a serial winner. He is a born winner. Eamon Fitzmaurice is successful everywhere he goes. He is a winning machine. Title after title at every level gaa from U15 to senior and everything in between. He is one of the most outstanding managers of his generation
Next on the list it seems Michael mcdermont us second option if rumours are right. Won few county titles in poor competitions, out of 7 last job in last 15 year he struggled in 3. He didn't do well at Parnells, didn't do well at Garycastle and when he managed Clare he failed to get them out of div 4 at three attempts. Lost his first championship game to Waterford. In year 2 Clare were 6th in div 4, as Clare were worsening other his tenure. And was hammered humiliated by kerry Cork by 25 18 and 15 pts. He won 1 championship game ever, 1 win in 7 championship games.
Third option that being floated is Bernard Flynn with Robbie Brennan assistant. Robbie Brennan could be a good manager but still unproven at top level. Bernard Flynn won 1 title as manager Westhmeath senior club championship. Remeber Fitzmaurice won 36 titles as manager.
Other options would be Davy Burke Best young manager in the country, but county board seem to ignoring him, while other leinster counties have tried to make him manager in last 2 years. He turned down 2 inter County Job in last 2 years teams outside div 1 div 2. An ambitious manager like him would surely be interested in Meath job.
This would be the plan. I see Eamon Fitzmaurice to come in for 3 years take us up to div 1, leaves us in div 1 and Cathal O Bric takes over after success with U20s as Meath senior manager in 2026 or 2027. That would ideal situation. Of course if Fitzmaurice is hugely successful like he has being in every managerial job and wants to stay we would gladly keep him. With Malachy O Rourke not interested Eamon Fitzmaurice is the new outstanding choice as Meath manager.

Replying To brian: "Joe, again you make fair points.
Or is that for anyone who's coming on board,
I don't think you're a BS merchant like some on here so i know if you're saying these things I know you've some genuine knowledge of the situation. if you can't say obviously don't ;)" Malachy wasn't interested in the travel that's fairly well known (I think)? And I have a feeling he may be managing another county in green and gold up that way.
No sponsors not linked at all to Eamonn but we should have a new main sponser in autumn is all I'll be saying for now!

Replying To royaldunne: " Replying To Thejoeshow: "[quote=brian: "Lads, I'm not going to get into the ins and outs here but i think Fitzmaurice is pie in the sky.
What i will say for o'Rourke is wherever he's gone success has followed in club and county football." Brian what's the alternative? There's nothing within the county at this moment in time that is a better option in my view. Outside the county if we want one of the better managers around it's going to be a 3 year term with no certainty over a second term. Davy Burke is popular but didn't last long at wicklow himself. O Rourke would have a monster commute and is also a teacher so not long term. More generally management positions in the current day, var a few exceptions where local management is available is a 2-4 year stint and a change at that point? The days of a boylan style reign are gone. I do find it amazing that meath would try get a top tier manager and you are still unhappy. As with many of your posts it's negative, what is the alternative rather than pick holes" That's it. Look I'd love a Meath man to take over. But at least they doing this right. Who will we get is anyones guess. Remember no one knew mod had even gone for interview before he was announced."]Farrell has RD I'd be certain of that and I think Davy hasn't Altho he was approached.
I'd be as critical of any of the CB but will tip my hat to them on this one for showing some ambition. I think they are aware of their reputation in and out of the county following the mess with Andy. If ever there was a time for a manager to use some leverage and get everything they want it's now.
I'd love a Meath man but we have sacked our best internal manager so no point going backwards. I do think we have excellent young coaches in Meath that, given 3 years under experienced set up would slot in next.
We don't want to end up the Man Utd of GAA chasing the Fergie (boylan) dream, get the best available with a 3 year plan and go from there. Unpopular on here but Andy has left his successor with a fit, young panel and more underage coming through, it's not a rebuild if we get the right man.
