I wouldn't really be using our 2021 result vs. Dublin as some yardstick of improvement. Dublin went on to beat Kildare by a similar score and then lose to Mayo, before getting relegated in the league early this year. It was not the 6 in a row Dublin... In the last 10 years, we've only ever gotten as close to Dublin as Dublin let us. CastleBravo (Meath) - Posts: 1759 - 24/06/2022 10:30:22 2427187 Link 4 |

Joe not doubting you on Eamonn Fitzmaurice but jesus that's pie in the sky. How do we expect a man who lives in north Kerry to commit to being manager of Meath. Like he'd have to be doing 600km+ round trips to even get up here and home before he'd even do a training session, never mind all the ancillary work around meeting players, taking in club games, trials, county board meetings etc. Fair play for aiming high but if they're looking at Eamonn maybe get onto Alex Ferguson too, see if he's doing anything. I jest of course. On Bernard Flynn as his name seems to be out there, again are we going to let a manager and most of his back room staff cut their teeth at intercounty level. I'm guessing Bernard has most if not all of the same backroom team as last year involved, i think Brennan was involved then too (might be wrong) . Who there has experience of the inter county game and knows the standards of skill, fitness, S&C needed to challenge. Yes some of them played and won at the top level, but have they managed and won at the top level? Look I suppose the same could be said of Davey Byrne and any of the Dublin lads I would've spoken about previously so lets just see what happens. brian (Meath) - Posts: 2000 - 24/06/2022 10:30:59 2427188 Link 3 |

I agree with you to an extent Joe, Did he bring us forward yes very much so in the first couple of years but we have fallen away quite quickly since that.Yes last summer we showed a bit of fight v Dublin but only in the second half when we were 10 points or so down at half time.I would argue Dublin went into sleep/relax mode like they did in the second half this year knew they had the game was won. While you are right about covid been disruptive no doubting that but it's was the same for every team so that doesn't really wash as excuse to me(just my opinion).Andy' getting us to Division 1 and the super eights was a good achievement and maybe in a way heightened our own expectations as to were we are at?In fairness to him it's not easy to stay in division 1 as Donegal, Kildare, Roscommon,Galway have been up and down the divisions and this year Dublin coming down,so while getting relegated wasnt what you would want it's not a disaster really. He did keep us up in division 2 and comfortably most years in fairness. It depends on what way you look at it this year we could have been relegated with the offaly and Down games we got a bit of luck in the end(although we butchered great goal chances in both)but the flip side we should have bet Derry and win the games v Offaly and Down and you would be in the promotion hunt. There is a fine line between a pat on the back and kick in the backside.

I would have the same views on Eamon I just know that's option 1 should they be able to. I can't see it being remotely possible all the same. I would not be in favour of Bernard for reasons you suggested and to be completely honest I am not sure how beneficial it is to the process that he announced his name is going forward in the manner he did, as seadog said at this rate it's less media circus we need. But he is clearly passionate for it and putting his best foot forward. Geraghty will come with a good back room team I gather Thejoeshow (Meath) - Posts: 687 - 24/06/2022 10:43:37 2427200 Link 0 |

Looking back over what happened with u20, that certainly divided opinion and just reading some of the comments from posters on here. Many belive he and his team were right to walk when they felt agreement was broken, others felt he left u20s because team lost a few warm up games ( hard to give credit to that opinion) For me he/they rightly stuck to their guns and walked. Have always liked BF, he came across as a very strong person on the recent LG programme on TG4. So if he puts a good management team in place then very best of luck to him. As I said, its now waiting to see what other options arise.

Have we really set the bar that low when its deeded a success to get within 5/6 points of a team who ran us ragged in first half and then took foot of pedal and let us back into game, then upped tempo and pulled away at their ease. Hopefully new management set their sights a bit higher.

Agree with you there Joe. BTW is Geraghty a stand alone candidate? I thought he was part of Bernard's ticket after the U20's last year? or will he go in with Bernard if he doesn't get it himself?

That's where our sights have been for 10 years and regardless of foot off the pedal we never got close. Like it or not we are and will be a mile off Dublin for a few years to come.

Geraghty has been put forward as a stand alone. RD will know more but I had heard not everyone on the back room team with BF agreed with walking away in that manner.

Agree with you Brian on Eammon fitzmaurice,as far as I know he is principal in a school in Kerry,so how he would commute up and down a few times a week I dont see it happening. While no doubt he would do well just say he was to take it a year maybe two travelling that distance would take its toll and should we not be looking for someone a bit longer term. Its not going to be a quick fix we need to grow a brand and structure style and that takes time.Your point on Bernard flynn and his team not having inter county success, I'd ask who inside the county has?just asking the question not knocking your point Brian,I agree it would be a bit of a gamble to have someone cut their teeth at inter county but I think we may have to accept it will probably happen. Its seems Geraghty is going for it as well wonder if he will have Evan's on his card?

Agree hard to see us beating them anytime soon, however I would expect a big improvement on our dismal showings of last few years.

Set the bar..... good point. its seems the focus seems to be on WHO gets the job. The bar i thought would be set by the CB and that would be the WHAT has to be done The task then is to talk to the potential candidate about that bar (standard) and how they plan to meet it. Is that not the case? That " bar" is the real issue. If its not then i am on a different page altogether. As that man on LMFM used to say."BYE BYE NOW"

BTW I was one who completely disagreed with what BF did when walking away from the 20s and voiced that opinion on here at the time and I would still be very disappointed in him for walking away from the rest of those u20 lads who committed to him and bought into everything he was selling. If I was on the selection committee I certainly would not be ruling him out of the job solely because of the 20s issue alone. However I would be taking this in to account when deciding if I felt he was the right man for the job because he has proven that he is quite willing to walk away from a group of players if he feels he is not getting what he wants or if he has a disagreement with the CB over something . I wouldn't hold against his backroom at all to be honest . Regardless if some agreed or disagreed with his decision once he had made it and walked away it would be impossible for his backroom staff to stay on even if they felt it was wrong to walk away. Interesting times ahead. As I said I wouldn't rule BF out completely because of the 20s issue but would certainly be considering it. Things don't always go to plan and you won't always get exactly what you want all of the time so if a few months into the job a situation arises where he and the CB are at loggerheads over something would it be a possibility that he would walk away again? Hey Proudroyal, not at all, can see you're not knocking at all, i know where you're coming from and that's the thing, we don't really have anyone within the county who's proven with intercounty success. It's why I'd be looking towards someone form our near and dear neighbours in Dublin for the new manager. Paul Clarke and Mick Deegan I believe were there for most if not all if Jim Gavin's time in charge. Clarke tended to manage the O'Byrne cup squads whilst the team was on its annual holiday and they nearly always won it. They are proven and would know the standards that are required to get close to Dublin which is where we need to aspire too. You might also possibly be able to get Sherlock, D'Arcy and Curran involved on the ticket too. Now i dunno if any of this is attainable but is there any harm in asking them if they were interested? Malachy O'Rourke is a great candidate too, but is he going to drive possibly 400Km round trips several times a week too. Geraghty might be an interesting candidate, he has name recognition and doesn't stand for BS but is that more of the same of Andy. Not knocking either man in that, Andy has a better record i would suggest, and given Graham's helath issues recently is fit and able to take on what would be a highly stressful role. Looked i think we all on here could talk about candidates and knock them for one thing or another but someone has to get the role eventually and no matter who they'll have my support, I think as you say, some one might get the role and be cutting their teeth at this level and if so hopefully it's the making of that person. brian (Meath) - Posts: 2000 - 24/06/2022 13:01:05 2427253 Link 1 |

Absolutely and having underage sides come thru who have beaten Dublin must only be a good thing

Exactly my concern as the CB are well able to get things backwards. Take the oust of Andy, he stayed on as didn't want to leave players in the lurch so late in the day when most would/should have walked

Lots of issues as you say, wont pretend go know what exactly went on, will admit my opinion was clouded by the fact I was never a fan of last manager. Can BF and Chairman ( dont think he should be involved in selection process) leave the past behind them? Even though I support him, I have to agree walking away will be a black mark on CV. To level things up he will need a very strong management team.
