New Meath Manager

Replying To seadog54:  "Lots of issues as you say, wont pretend go know what exactly went on, will admit my opinion was clouded by the fact I was never a fan of last manager. Can BF and Chairman ( dont think he should be involved in selection process) leave the past behind them? Even though I support him, I have to agree walking away will be a black mark on CV. To level things up he will need a very strong management team."
Agree 100% . None of us really know what went on but obviously BF claims he had a written agreement but I have also know of people involved in this from the CB who dispute that any such agreement was in place so it's a bit of a he said she said scenario.

I'm sure in his interview it will be a massive elephant in the room so it probably just needs to be addressed by all involved .

Again would not be totally against him getting it especially if he has a strong back room but there will always be that nagging doubt in my head that if he walked away before over a disagreement who is to say he wouldn't do it again.

It's why I'd be looking towards someone form our near and dear neighbours in Dublin for the new manager.

Paul Clarke and Mick Deegan I believe were there for most if not all if Jim Gavin's time in charge. Clarke tended to manage the O'Byrne cup squads whilst the team was on its annual holiday and they nearly always won it. They are proven and would know the standards that are required to get close to Dublin which is where we need to aspire too. You might also possibly be able to get Sherlock, D'Arcy and Curran involved on the ticket too. Now i dunno if any of this is attainable but is there any harm in asking them if they were interested?

Malachy O'Rourke is a great candidate too, but is he going to drive possibly 400Km round trips several times a week too.

Geraghty might be an interesting candidate, he has name recognition and doesn't stand for BS but is that more of the same of Andy. Not knocking either man in that, Andy has a better record i would suggest, and given Graham's helath issues recently is fit and able to take on what would be a highly stressful role.

Looked i think we all on here could talk about candidates and knock them for one thing or another but someone has to get the role eventually and no matter who they'll have my support, I think as you say, some one might get the role and be cutting their teeth at this level and if so hopefully it's the making of that person."
In fairness while technically its inter county football I wouldn't read too much into the o byrne cup. While nice to win it(dont get me wrong)I'd see it as more getting young lads experience or guys coming back from injury game time before league.Dont think I'd count it really as something to put on CV again just my opinion.I can see your point though those lads have been a part of all Ireland winning management team so that experience would certainly help. But how much input would they have had?was it mainly Galvin or was it a combination of both would be interesting to know that?In fairness though you are talking about six in a row winning team while no doubt they would need to be managed, coached etc they had so many leaders and good players would you need to be very good to get the best out of them,I'd imagine the players drove most of it themselves (not taking anything away from management)and drove eash other on to the heights they reached. While I'm not going to lie I'd find it hard to see a Dub over Meath if that what it takes to get us back at the top table I'll support them 100 per cent but would others?Say we had a rocky year would people turn against him/her and use been a Dub to beat them with?I'd hope not but wouldn't like to put money on it?

Great points well made there Proudroyal. Looked might all be a moot point anyways, but good to have the discussions about it. On the later part i see exactly where you're coming from but lets be honest and say that the countys population has exploded in the last 30 years mainly from Dubs relocating out to here. We need to move beyond the close minded mentality of they're not welcome, which can be very prevalent. Look at Stuart Lowndes was it in Andy's first year, uproar over nothing, the lad was and continues to play for Dunboyne to this day. If they (the Dubs) are involved in their local communities and have sons/ daughters playing then looked they are part of Meath GAA IMHO. If they still cheer Dublin and the kids do likewise that's their entitlement but we need to be bringing them into the fold and not talk about them in any other way. Looked I'm sure i'd joke away about the Dubs as you say but I'd never use it as a stick to batter someone over the head with. You and I and I'm sure several more would accept through slightly gritted teeth, but you'd have some who'd rule them out out of hand. For those people, their days and attitudes are numbered.

The whole mod v Andy thing is bizarre. The fact is mod in all league and championship games won 3 second half's of football and those were v Wicklow twice and Waterford once. Anyone who is trying to say he did better than Andy need to learn about football. That's all I will say on the matter.

Well he won very little of the 70 minutes either. However is it acceptable for any county to have out scored opponents in 3 games in over 30
Games ? If it is then bring him back. Sure who knows we might get kepak back on board

It's wins and losses. Mick has the worst record of championship wins since the 70s only winning 40% of his games, Andy won 50%. Can't compare them. Ultimately it comes down to wins and losses and Andy got to D1, super 8s and won more games. Never mind the physical conditioning and performance levels which were higher. Not a big feather in Andy's cap being better than MOD but just a fact.

O Dowd deserves some credit. He took over when we were at a particularly low ebb. He got us promoted to Division 2, and we were in the hunt for Division 1 during his tenure. Mcentee also deserves credit, but we have been abysmal of late and he really should have left a year ago.
One thing both men have in common is they were doing it for the betterment of Meath football.
For my mind Bernard Flynn is a strong candidate. He has a strong record in business, and a passion for the county. I personally don't want to see an outsider appointed. Outside managers go against the very ethos of the GAA. The little herbalist from Dunboyne developed the fiercest, most dogged team in Ireland.
Finally if people want to see change at county board level then go to your clubs next AGM and put your name forward to be a delegate.

I see poor ould MOD has been dragged into the argument for no reason. Everyone has pretty much moved on from the era but some just can't let it die. Andy was a better manager, no one's debating that and his record in his first 3 years backs that up, but lets be honest - second half fades out (MOD) were replaced by first half massacres (Andy), trying to play football (MOD) was replaced by defend for your lives (Andy) and we can go on and on but it's going nowhere. Neither are the current or future manager of Meath so maybe lets talk about that for a bit.

Was hoping we might hear a bit of news of the weekend, maybe garner a few headlines in the meeejjjjaaaaa but as suspected our journey to irrelevance continues apace.

You were running MOD down for no reason but to make way for your boy. When things didnt go so well for Andy you made false comparisons with MOD's record. When Andy went out on a low you still tried to justify him with fake stats.
MODS team drew the likes of Tyrone in qualifiers in Omagh at that and would have beat them only for the referee .Andys players got to super 8s by beating teams like Clare. Granted Andy did better at getting favourable draws which is not accidental the way the GAA works.
Of course you should stand up for Andy but try to do better. Your only tactic of falsely criticising another good man is not acceptable. It also is gone way past been pathetic

2019

2020
Leinster: Beat Wicklow and Kildare beaten by Dublin

2022

Of our last 3 managers I'd say honestly Banty has the best record, beat Galway and Kildare over his two years, MOD and Andy's best result was beating Kildare once . That's it. I'd even say Mick lost to better opposition at away/ neutral venue's whereas Andy lost at home.

Looking at that it makes very poor reading for 12 years. You're judged on the championship and the gap from us to the top teams is only widening and that's the job of work ahead of whomever is coming in. Raise the standards and start consistently beating teams of a roughly equal standard as us and improved performance in the qualifiers/ backdoor. We've won 4 games through the backdoor in 12 years, that's just not good enough.

Interesting reading. Jogs the memory a bit.
Of course every match has a story of its own. unfortunately the wins over top counties are not there. Some were not having strong enough players, Some opposition was excellent, Some were down to referees, And some were down to bad selections where out of form players or even some not up to senior level were mysteriously played, and good players were out of position or left off.

With respect, Galway in 2011 were atrocious and I wouldn't class scraping by them in Navan as any sort of achievement by Banty. If I remember correctly, we were actually on the verge of being beaten that day but somehow scraped by. Think it was Stephen Bray who got the winner and Murphy in goals who made a brilliant save in injury time. Banty also had the ignominy of bringing us down to division 3 with barely a whimper.

I still look back and wonder what on earth was the thinking behind Eamonn O'Brien being relieved of his duties in 2010.

It's fair to say banty and MOD had far better players at their disposal in my opinion..... particularly in the forward department. Has.to be taken into account too. Just select any game in either spell and you'll see a much stronger starting team then over the last few years.

It's Apple and oranges for the reasons above, can we just stop. Fully get Andy was never popular with a cohort of Meath fans from get go as one poster has said, fair enough no need to run any former manager down or compare just time to move on.

Michael McDermott is in and we'll supported by certain board members.

I see the point you are making re players and forwards in particular Southmeathgael, but lets not forget Andy had this panel promoted to Division 1 and in the super 8's in 2019 which he's been lauded about. The panel might've changed a bit since then but for the most part a lot of the 2019 panel are still there and Andy was in charge if who he changed from that time. So I don't buy the argument about stronger teams. Its also his job to have gotten more out of them. Prime example, look at Cillian O'Sullivan a mainstay of the MOD and Andy teams and he's not even close to the same player now as he was.

A lot of people here have turned on the players in recent weeks (and they have their faults and blame to carry) but a lot of people were blowing them up for the last couple of years and saying the glory days were on the way back. Now it's a case of the players aren't good enough. Is the player regression in the last 18 months, the fault of players or do management, tactics and game plan have no part to play in how we've slipped. For me both are true.

We've been told ad nauseum that these players "love" Andy and his training and management, so if that is true why are things on the field so bad over the last 18 months?

Lets hope that can be resolved by the incoming management team, because its a huge area of concern.

Joe not attacking you with this but here's the championship records of our last 3 managers

Banty : Played 9 Won 5 Lost 4 56% Win Rate
MOD : Played 14 Won 6 Lost 8 43% Win Rate
Andy : Played 22 Won 10 Lost 12 45% Win Rate

Think you can compare MOD and Andy and MOD never had a qualifier game at home. Andy had 4 at home and only won one of them.

Definitely. There is no point going back over old history to do comparisons. We should only look back on history as a way to gauge progress going forward. But it must be said the leftovers of the 07-10 team that Banty and MOD in his early years got had way more firepower up front than the team we currently have
